Pinky/red patches on dd's body but it's not Eczema. Any ideas?

They're just on her body and are an oval shape. They're not flaky or dry and she doesn't suffer with dry or sensitive skin. I also cannot think of anything that has changed i.e. diet wise, washing powders or toiletries.

I took her to the Gp's on Friday and she said she was sure it wasn't Eczema but couldn't think what it might be so she called in another Dr who said the same, not eczema but had no idea otherwise. All they suggested was to watch it and if it persisted or became worse to go back.

Well she's had it for 3 weeks now anyway so for me thats long enough, although it isn't bothering her, it doesn't look very nice.
She has 1 patch on one of her shoulders, 1 above her nipple, 1 in the middle of her stomach and a cluster of 3 on her hip where the side of her knickers are. Yesterday I noticed she has started to get another cluster on her back. These patches are smaller but I have a feeling they will get bigger like the other ones.

I'm thinking of asking for a referal to a Dermatologist to find out what it is but we are moving areas very very soon so it would be a waste of time to do it here.

I just wondered if anyone here might have an idea of what it could be?

TIA Smile

It's not \link{http://www.bbc.co.uk/health/conditions/ringworm2.shtml\ringworm}, is it?

Nbg · 08/05/2006 20:24

Sorry, just reading through.

I don't think it's ring worm as it's not raised and she's not scratching it.

have they given you anything for it?

Nbg · 08/05/2006 20:54

No nothng.
Just "keep and eye on it"!

Like I said it's not bothering her and she's well in herself but I can't really leave her with patches all over her body when I don't know what they are.

I have tried Sudocreme which doesn't do anything.
I've been reading up on Eczema but it just doesn't sound like it.

I got some weird red patches but yonks ago. Gps were stumped until I happened (by chance) to see senior partner GP who gave me some very strong cream (Elocon) and it cleared up in about a week. They weren't dry and I never actually asked what they were (was ages ago, pre-kids and before I was really bothered about my health Blush).

I don't know how old she is but perhaps you could try some very mild hydrocortisone on one small patch to see if it makes a difference (but obviously wouldn't do this if she's under the age it's recommended for without prescription).

Nbg · 08/05/2006 21:03

She's 2.7. Is that too young?

I have some Hydrocortisone that I have prescribed for mild excema on my eyelids.
Do you think I could try it?

I would have thought that if that clears it up then it must be eczema.

dd2 had some patches like you described, it turns out that it was an allergic reaction to dd1's rabbit. GP prescribed some Canesten cream which cleared it up. Since we've restricted dd2's access to the rabbit there have only been one or two flare ups.

Has your dd been in contact with any unfamiliar animals recently.

dd2 is no longer allowed to stroke the rabbit, or to sleep in dd1's bed. The rabbit is in dd1's room.

Nbg · 08/05/2006 21:42

No we just have a dog and thats it and she hasn't come into contact with any other animals.

I have just been re reading some bits on Eczema and it says certain foods can cause flare ups and it lists Tomatoes.
She has been eating alot of them recently and she has had a previous reaction to them but it wasn't the same. Around her mouth would go red but it would only last an hour or so and it would be gone and since then she's had no other reactions.

Sounds like pityriasis rosea to me. \link{http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/pityriasis-rosea/DS00720\Here} is a link to description and pictures.
I had this in my early 20's. My mother was sure I had ringworm and kept the entire family away from me until it was properly diagnosed. It is fairly harmless and goes away on its own. At the time I was told that the only thing that can possibly clear it up more quickly is sunshine, so I tried to blague and beach holiday out of my parents...but no luck.

Nbg · 09/05/2006 09:55

Yes that sounds a bit more like it!
Although that site mentions alot about itching and it doesn't cause her any discomfort at all but the second picture looks like the patches that are coming up now.

Thank you Smile

Oh thanks katzg and HenniPenni Smile

DD's isn't as bad as your dd's katzg although the patches appearing on her back are small atm and are coming up 3 at a time so there is a possibility it could become that. Is she being treated for it?
I have noticed that they can become more red at times and maybe they do coincide with heat, actually now I'm typing they are worse when she gets out of the bath!

HenniPenni, exactly, no itching just patches and like I said she's had them 3 weeks now so if it's 6-12 then she's only really just started then.

NBG, DDs go red when she's been in the bath/shower. They also become quite dry looking as they start to fade. Bless, she thought her skin was going to fall off in huge patchesGrin

SofiaAmes · 09/05/2006 18:35

I don't remember my pityriasis rosea being particularly itchy. Hope you get to the bottom of it. In my experience, gp's are just not very good at diagnosing rashes.

meysey · 09/05/2006 22:13

can I recommend something harmless to try on it? my DS had funny blotches on his trunk. A paediatrician said it was eczema, but we weren't convinced as it wasn't like anyone else's eczema. We thought it looked more like nappy rash or fungal and put Green Baby nappy balm on it. This has cured it. (I have no connection with Green Baby at all).

Jimjamskeepingoffvaxthreads · 09/05/2006 22:23

Fungal- try canesten or athletes foot cream. ds1 had them then gave them to me and ds2. I showed ds1's paed at his last check and said I thought it might be fungal- she said almost certainly was if it was circular.
