Night sweats

Hi

I've been having night sweats, every night, for about 6 weeks.

I assumed that my thyroid was overactive again but my bloods confirm that my levels are normal.

What could it be? I've had more blood tests today, GP appeared to tick almost every type of test on both forms.

Shouldn't be menopause, still get regular AF visits and I'm still in my early thirties.

I am BF an 10 mo insomniac, so I'm tired and I'm told by friends and family that I'm getting too skinny, although I eat fairly well.

I'm sick of waking up drenched 3-5 times a night.

Any suggestions please?

My only experiences is the menopause when I was 49-50, and an Overactive Thyroid, but sweating was during the day when exerting myself. That was when I was in my 20s. I also lost a lot of weight, felt ravenously hungry and never stopped eating and becoming very irrational , had like PMT all the time.

Thanks digerd, your description of your thyroid issues almost perfectly match mine. I had night sweats too though.

I've had thyroid problems on and off for 6 years now but the only time it gets really bad is postnatally. I've been off meds since October.

I was convinced it was thyroid related, tired, moody etc but the problem is that they're also the effects of having 2 small DD's and not much sleep!

I'm just worried that this time my symptoms might point to someting else, less controllable.

I had night sweats all the time when feeding, for up to 18 months after each baby.

Had bloods done. Gp said just hormonal changes after birth, while feeding etc.

Ask for a glucose fasting check for diabetes

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 21/03/2013 22:50

Might not be relevant in your case but I take Menoforce sage tablets which have completely stopped my (menopause related) sweats.
From the various thyroid threads on MN, I've gathered there is more than one way to test for thyroid problems, but gps aren't always aware/prepared to test for this. Might be worth searching the threads.

Sympathy. I suffer from horrible nightsweats. My bed is a mess most mornings and my children wont come near me until I've had a shower Sad

In my case it's a combination of lupus and the meds I take to control it and my recurrent depression plus a bit of peri-menopause thrown in, as they seem worse just before and during my period.

Horrible though as I feel like an unattractive sweaty blob Sad and even changing the sheets every other day, my bed smells stale and nasty Blush

Good that your GP is taking it seriously though and doing lots of tests as it can be a result of some serious health conditions.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 22/03/2013 08:46

Try the sage tablets, Daisy. Might at least reduce the peri-m element.

OP
Just remembered that there was another phase I had of night sweats when I first went on a steroid inhaler for Asthma < had forgotten about that>.
Side effects wore off though after some months.

MrsMorton · 22/03/2013 10:00

I have night sweats, not thyroid related, not menopause, no cancer or tv or lupus or anything. Just raging soaking really fucking annoying night sweats.

LeggaDAISYcal · 22/03/2013 10:01

Thanks shotgun; I'll try them Smile

MrsMorton · 22/03/2013 10:01

Tv = tb.

digerd · 22/03/2013 10:42

During that phase of night sweats on the steroid inhaler, I ended up sleeping naked which I don't normally like doing, but it worked.

Back in my thermal pjs now though.

Like lisad's DH, my mum had horrendous night sweats and had cancer. Night sweats caused by cancer are a lot worse than even menopausal night sweats. My mum was having to change her night clothes and bedding a couple of times a night. Presumably your GP asked you questions that would rule out cancer?

Obviously it's highly unlikely to be anything so serious but horrendous night sweats is a red flag for cancer so it does need ruling out.
