Amitriptyline and thyroxine and alcohol !

Hello, my doctor has prescrbed 10mg amitriptyline for my migraines which I am really hoping will work. I have noticed on the leaflet though that it mentions talking to your doctor if you take thyroxine? Im on 75mg which I take each morning. Does anyone else take this combination as I would be surpised if there is problem taking both?

More upsetting is it says do not drink alcohol? Is this true (please no !)

I am on amitriptyline too and take
30mg at night. I drink alcohol too and nothing has happened to me! I assume it would make you drowsy but if you are going to bed anyway it surely wouldn't make any difference!

RichTeaAreCrap · 21/03/2013 14:06

I am on Amitriptyline too and I have alcohol and haven't noticed any difference at all.

Gallifrey - did you put weight on with it? I feel as though I am piling it on!

Thanks - anyone out there on thyroxine as well? Thats bad news about the weight - Ive just managed to get rid of some of mine after being hypothyroid :(

I take Amitriptyline, 10-20mg, at night and it does make me a cheap date where alcohol's concerned.

This will briefly answer the thyroxine concerns - simply that thyroxine may increase the effect of amitriptyline. You're on the lowest dose possible, so hopefully, the effect won't be too strong. I've found the biggest side effect of amitriptyline has been really vivid dreams.

And yes, I put on a stone in a year after starting on it. I'm managing to lose a bit, now, though.

I took amirtiptyline for about a year and was on thyroxine at the same time. I don't really drink much as its one of my migrane triggers but got very drunk very easily on both.

Main side effect I had of combining was tiredness in the morning - struggled to wake and then falling back asleep really easy ( yes in the shower). Had To get up at least an hour before I felt safe enough to drive.

Came off the ami when I wanted to get pregnant - doc said it should be ok but didn't want to.

If you are putting on weight when you (honestly) shouldn't be then ask for a blood test for thyroid levels..

Thanks everyone - ami is looking less and less desirable. My consulant has said an alternative may be Dosulepsin. Does anyone know if this has the same side effects ? thanks very much !

when I first started taking it amitriptyline was like a miracle drug to me! I take it for fibromyalgia and at first it was brilliant and I was almost normal again. Now I'm taking 3 times as much as well as other painkillers and it's not making any difference.

I do however have the most lovely nights sleep!

I know people who take ami and the weight issue seeems to be linked to the drug creating a hearty appetite for sweet foods- so just don't act on it! I don't think the drug itself causes weight gain- unlike say steroids.

gallifrey · 21/03/2013 19:05

I find it almost impossible to lose weight and have been in amitriptyline since 2011. I initially put it down to not being able to exercise but even when I was able to run it didn't make any difference Sad

lloydjam can't say about Amitriptyline but you are taking Thyroxine as your thyroid gland is underactive so you are just replacing what your body can't produce so I can't see that alcohol will harm. Wine
