Smear test

Hi, I went for a smear test today. I had been told they use plastic speculums now however when I went they still used metal ones. Is this still the norm? Or there any disadvantages to using that type of equipment? (I had heard it makes the test less reliable. Obviously it's more uncomfortable as well)

Wondered if I should mention it to someone or not?

How can it be unreliable? All speculums do is open you up so they can reach the cervix. Plastic is disposable so does away with having to steralise and they are less cold when used.

Maybe you are confused with the difference between using a spatula to take the cells and a brush: brushes came in years ago but NHS was slower to change to it due to cost, but brushes take more cells from insdie neck of cervix.

No need to mention to anyone.
