Does the age you started your periods have any bearing on when your dd does?

I was very late starting mine (15yrs), I had norks from 12 ish but no periods- which of course I was desperate for .

Dd is quite small for her age (she is 10 now) - I just wonder if she will start sooner - I know that girls are generally starting younger now.

What's your experience?

My mum was 9 Shock my sister was 11 and I was 13. They were both very sporty and thin, Mum was only 7.5 stone until late 30's. I was not sporty and was 7 stone at about 10.

Ponders: that pattern has only happened within the last three generations or so. I only mentioned it because that's what I thought this thread was asking about, although obviously that's an average so many families won't follow the pattern. The factors that are causing it to fall (improved child health, increase in average weight) will presumably level off at some point, so I can't see that the average age would fall that low.

Here's a pretty graph though...

Me 14
DD nearly 16

NomNomDePlum · 20/03/2013 23:21

mum was 9 (and 59 for her last period. 50 years!) and teeny, she never made it to 5'.
i was nearly 15, and portly. not weight related for my family, then.

NightmareSpoon · 20/03/2013 23:43

My mum was 13, as was I.

I think the 7.5 stone thing was true for me, and interestingly whenever my weight drops below 7.5 stone my periods stop and don't come back until I've put weight on again (I know this because I suffered from an eating disorder in my teens and 20s).

sashh · 21/03/2013 01:27

Helly

You can chemically delay puberty. Obviously something to discuss with DD and Dr if you want to go down that route.

BertieBotts · 21/03/2013 01:41

7.5 stone is interesting. Whenever I drop in weight my periods go all screwy and I am around 8 stone normally so it doesn't take much.

My mum started at 16, I started at 15.5. My sister started almost exactly a year later even though there are 2.75 years between us, so she must have been 13.75.

digerd · 21/03/2013 08:14

Me 2 weeks before my 12th birthday

  • 5Foot 1 and 6stone 10 DD 13, much taller and heavier. I developed breast buds at 10, but DD later
hellymelly · 21/03/2013 18:07

I think I will talk to the GP, she has a small spot on her nose today, which could be totally unconnected, but she is also very stroppy and over emotional at the moment. I am worried about the emotional impact for her of early puberty , and also it having an impact on her height later. She is tall for her age, but very thin . Haven't weighed her for ages actually so will do that later. She doesn't have any breast changes or any hairs getting longer under her arms. I wouldn't have noticed the hair downstairs as its invisible when she's running around. She was a bit sore and I was putting some cream on her, when I saw the hairs. Shock.

MelodyBaker · 21/03/2013 18:33

I started age 11, dd at 13. I asumed she would start at a simalar age to me.

2kidsintow · 21/03/2013 22:37

Me. 13
DD. The week before she was 12.

MirandaWest · 21/03/2013 23:24

Not sure my mum has ever weighed as much as 7.5 stone and definitely had periods :

dothraki · 21/03/2013 23:43

Miranda - I only weighed over 7.5 stone when I was pregnant, and after I hit 45 Grin

nooka · 21/03/2013 23:57

I was 13, dd 12. She is tall (5'9") slim and very active. I was just tall and thin :)

My cousin didn't start until she was almost 18 (lucky her I thought) and although she is not as tall as me she's much more curvy.

hellymelly · 22/03/2013 22:57

Well I weighed dd and she is four stone, so am hoping that means it is years away. She is the tallest in her year though.

piratecat · 22/03/2013 23:04

i was 11 1/2, dd was 9 1/2.

My boobs had really grown and were hurting a few months before.

dd's boobs started to hurt when she was 8, then she got about 6 inches taller over a year, then her periods started. lots of signs to say she was on her way to them.

piratecat · 22/03/2013 23:05

oh and dd was 5stone 10. and 5ft tall when she started. it's a fallacy that they can only start when they hit a certain weight.

ballroomblitz · 22/03/2013 23:10

Dd is too little yet but mum was 11. I was 14. I wouldn't have been 7.5 stone at 14 I wouldn't think as I was a really skinny, gangly child and I'm only over 8 now at 34 and two kids later.

LadyPeterWimsey · 22/03/2013 23:19

Hellymelly - Dd started getting pubic hair about 8 but is now 11 and hasn't started her periods yet, although her boobs are starting to come in, and have been for a year or so.

She has been a stroppy cow for years and years though - I really wish I could attribute it to hormones.

CouthySaysEatChoccyEggs · 22/03/2013 23:31

Didn't work with my Mother and me - she was 10yo and still in Primary school, I was 14.5. DD is now 15 and hadn't started.

I think we like to go things arse about face - far from getting younger with each generation, we've got older...

Confused
CouthySaysEatChoccyEggs · 22/03/2013 23:33

And 7 1/2 stone can't work - my Mother was barely 5.5 stone, I was about 6 stone, DD is currently 8 stone and not started yet...

MurderOfGoths · 22/03/2013 23:36

Mum was 12, I was only just 11. Only the second in my year group to start.

CouthySaysEatChoccyEggs · 22/03/2013 23:39

DD has 28D/E boobs, everything else developed, she has had an obvious 'extra' moody week each month for 2 years now...

Yet no period. I'm sure it isn't far though.

unlucky83 · 22/03/2013 23:43

Helly - DD1 got pubic hairs at 6 ...took her to GP and had her checked out at the hospital and they said it was not puberty but something to do with her adrenal glands...not a problem...but might be worth getting it checked out -early onset of puberty can have health implications.
DD1 is now just 12, has had pubic hair and armpit hair for years, getting boobs now but no periods yet ....expecting them within the year though...
