Oh Sh*t. Help. I've got a massive bald spot and I've just realised. Behind/above my ear.

I knew I'd been losing a lot of hair recently but I assumed it was from all over (has happened before, post pregnancy and when I did a vlcd a couple of years back)

Was reading to DS2 and pushed my hand through my hair. Felt weird.

Its big. About 5cm diameter almost circle shape. And theres nothing in it but fluff. Its sort of behind my ear and above it. Towards the back of my head.

SHt Sht Sh*t.

Thank god its not on top of my scalp but what if this is just the start?

sh*t

What is it?

I went through a stage of having 10p piece bald patches. I used to use hair grips to pin hair over them. Hair would grow back then another would appear. After about 6 months, my hair went back to normal. I never did find out what caused it though it was after a period of stress.

Are you eating ok?, suffering from stress?

Whyriskit · 19/03/2013 19:59

It is bollocks isn't it! I've been getting this on and off for about 10 years. It has always grown back but it's a bit crap when it's happening. Has your scalp been itchy at all? Mine always is when it starts.
If you're feeling fluff that might be a good thing as it may mean that the hair is growing back. I did go and see the GP when it first started happening but he wasn't much help, I think it's just one of those things.
No help really but just wanted you to know you're not alone!

I had a similar bald patch for about s year. It grew back eventually and has been fine for a few years now. Go the docs in case your iron levels need checking and try not to worry, my hairdresser said it was very common and I am sure it will grow back!

eyestightshut · 19/03/2013 20:07

I had this, a year after dd was born. Diagnosed with alopecia arreata. Fluff is good - it is your new hair regrowing,in the mean time go see your GP and have some bloods taken- Full blood count, iron, ferritin and thyroid function are the main ones.
Am now struggling to maintain my pelt 3 years later Grin

Hair loss? Either diffuse or in patches can be down to autoimmune issues- one of the totally unexpected thing I found after cutting wheat/gluten and other grain out of my diet, was hair growth, noticed it first in my lashes and brows then all over including scalp. After I'd noticed re growth I googled hair loss and gluten, and found I was not alone seeing "age related" hair thinning reverse on a gluten free diet!
Previously, my scalp and skin in general, had been quite itchy a lot of the time, possibly this may have been as a result of some kind of autoimmune reaction going on in the hair follicles but obviously that's only my own speculation!

I first noticed hair regrown on my eyelashes about 6 weeks after I stopped eating grains. Worth a try?

thank you for responses. am in the bath unable to stop thinking about Sad could be stress relayed but I wonder if its because I was ill recently as it seems to coincide. nothing major - really bad throat, cough achy etc but was out of action for a day or two which is not like me. I just keep going. no time to be ill Grin will see gp in morning and also have a look at the gluten thing thanks Smile

sorry didn't say. no itching ay all. only discovered by accident. have put shed loads of weight on recently but assumed cake relayed LOL. could it be thyroid? will just stop mulling now and see what gp has to say. damn will have to drag sick ds1 and reluctant ds2 with me (he trashed the nurses room last week after we had to pin him down to see his earsShock )

have been to GP. She gave me steroid cream and next week I'll get a blood test. We shall see how it progresses and give the cream a bit of time. I read some stuff on accupuncture too which is interesting, but I'll leave that for now unless I start getting more.

My brother had similar patch a few years ago, but it didn't progress- hair just grew back eventually. BUT not trying to scare you and could have been completely coincidental, but he did have a dodgy boiler at the time- was emitting carbon monoxide which is obviously not good.As you have fluey symptoms, maybe get things checked out in your house?

worldgonecrazy · 21/03/2013 13:31

In most people the patch will grow back and you will only have one in your lifetime. To disguise it, use mascara to colour the scalp, or you can buy special stuff aimed at alopecia sufferers. You'll be amazed at how a little darkening of the skin under the hair hides the spot.

Get everything tested just in case there's a physical reason.

Alopecia aratea is really common but most people are too frightened to talk about it. I don't mind talking about it now, but at the time I had two bald spots I was ashamed, afraid it was all going to fall out, and cried for weeks.

25catsnameSam · 21/03/2013 13:38

DH had this a few years ago, he had steroid cream and his hair grew back, it is quite unsettling to have though and I do feel for you. world that's a great tip.

lynniep · 22/03/2013 12:31

thanks again all. (purring we have a carbon monoxide detector so dont think its that)
I will get some cream to cover it but not every day (no-one at work will notice I shouldnt think as it is hidden behind my ear and no-one sits behind me!)
Blood test is next week
