laser treatment for hair removal - any experiences?

Has anybody any experience of this laser treatment for hair removal? I'm thinking of having it done on my bikini line as it's such a pain (literally Grin)and cost wise I'd break even after about 2 years of waxing - based on £11 a month over 24 months.
I'd be interested to hear if anybody has had it or like me, is a bit cautious about the long term affects of the laser on the skin.
Any hairy mumsnetter help me!?

I had it done - about 2 yrs ago - and to be honest it was pretty much a waste of money ! And a PITA ! I seemed to have had hundreds of appointments over about 6 months - and eventually just got fed up with going and stopped. I have definitely got less hair there now - but not none - which is what I was aiming for. Had my armpits done too - and you wouldn't be able to tell !

Sorry to be voice of doom - I was expecting great things and it just hasn't happened for me ! Maybe someone else will come on and say it's fab !

works best if you have fair skin and dark hair.

A woman I work with had it done and is very very very impressed.

I'm tempted, but I was pregnant at the time when my work colleague started raving about it. I'm back at work now and starting to consider it.

I'll talk to her next week and post what she said.

My legs are almost as hairy as my cats. I would love to never have to wax or shave them again....

Norah · 06/05/2006 19:49

That's what they told me - and I do have both !

expatinscotland · 06/05/2006 19:55

My sister had her pits done and now she never has to shave. I hate her!

She has dark hair, but very olive skin.

It only took THREE treaments, too.

Dunno what they used on her, tho, she had it in the US.

charliegirl25 · 06/05/2006 19:58

i've had it done on upper lip Blush only had one treatment so far though. Got another one in a couple of weeks.

Norah · 06/05/2006 20:01

Hmmmm - keep hearing these miracle stories about it - pisses me off !!!

My friend's sil went once - had her bikini line done and allegedly ALL the hairs fell out three days after the treatment and NEVER grew back ! That's why I went for it - was v cynical prior to this info - but all I can say is that it didn't work on me !

I wish they'd give you a money back guarantee - but I guess they don't because they know it works on some people and not on others ! Am very jealous now - cost me over a grand too - for nothing !

charliegirl25 · 06/05/2006 20:04

they state when you go that it is NOT hair removal it is hair reduction. And they can't be held responsible if for hormonalreasons such as the menopause that they might grow back.

Norah · 06/05/2006 20:05

Yeah I know - I had to sign a disclaimer to say I accepted that - but doesn't stop me wishing I'd got some results for my dosh !

expatinscotland · 06/05/2006 20:14

Bummer you're not in the US, Norah, b/c a lot of places there do offer money back guarantees.

Envy my sister's smooth armpits.

She's saving up for her arms next - she's got some light hair on the forearms that she doesn't want.

poppyseed · 06/05/2006 20:58

Hmmmmm mixed reactions then really.....
Anybody know of any risk with it of anything?
Am I cynical or what!?
I'm fairly fair skinned and dark with a normalish bikini line (apparently!) so I wonder if I could do a test area and wait and see what it was like!?

Ive thought of this. Where do you find out which salons do it?

jampots · 06/05/2006 21:00

and more to the point, how does it actually work? Do you need more sessions because the hairs dont fall out or because of the size of area?

poppyseed · 06/05/2006 21:00

I stumbled on it at Saks beauty salon at the David Lloyd gym I go to if this helps?

OP posts:
poppyseed · 06/05/2006 21:01

or do you need more sessions because the hairs are coarser too!?

jampots · 06/05/2006 21:02

hmmmm the gym - hadnt thought of that

MrsFogi · 06/05/2006 21:04

A point to bear in mind is that you should only do it after you've finished having babies as it seems the hair can all just come back in pregnancy so it's a waste of money to have it done if you're likely to get pg again (don't know if this is relevant but I found it interesting when I was told this at a consultation before launching into paying to remove every hair on my body below my nose Grin)

Coolmama · 08/05/2006 09:22

I had my bikini and armpits done at a laser clinic in London - about £115 for all the bits at each appt. - had 4 sessions - (interuppted by a pregnancy and baby) and am almost hairfree - am pale-skinned with dark hair.
If you do go - make sure to use an anesthetic cream applied about an hour beforehand.
Ands also prepare yourself for the smell of singed hair - I did not know about that and it was eeeeeeuuuwwww!

bloss · 08/05/2006 09:44

Electrolysis well done definitely works. Due to different hair strengths, some people need more treatments but it will work for everyone. But you need someone who knows what they are doing and is well trained. Had my bikini line done years and years ago and haven't touched it since. Had my eyebrows done over the last 2 years and now don't need to touch them ever. Am saving up for lower legs - that will cost a bomb! But far cheaper than waxing in the longer term
