Chicken Pox

My poor little ds has got a cold, and now has C Pox. He is quite lively still, although is having a rest on the sofa at the moment, which is unlike him! I have armed myself with Calpol, Piriton and Calomine Lotion in Aqueous cream. Do I need anything else? NHS book says to give cool baths every 3-4 hours, but this seems excessive.

I have done a search for this, before anyone says to do so, but I vouldn't find anything relevant re treatment. Am I right that he can go back to school a couple of days after the last blisters scab over? He only has a few at the moment, but they are big ones.

my ds was bathed in tepid baths with three tablespoons of bicarb of soda and then topped and toed with the oil based calamine. Managed just one scar (which was my dh fault as he was too rough with the towel when drying him)!

Catilla · 06/05/2006 15:52

If he's not itchy and doesn't have a temperature, I'd see no need for baths. My ds got through c.pox in about a week with essentially no itching at all.

Treat the symptoms you see, is my rule.

Damn, I meant to get some bicarb! Will have to get tomorrow...thanks for reminding me. How long do they feel poorly for? I remember having it at 11, and feeling awful for two weeks, but then I did have it really badly.

He does have a slight temperature.

depends on severity normally poorly for a week and itchy for a while after that.

Thanks! I'm a c pox virgin!

porridge oats work too, instead of bicarb - dd has been having porridge baths every night for a week (she thinks its really funny) - she has c pox too! I used piriton and eurax (sp) cream in the morning and then again after her bath. She is still spotty, but was only itchy one night and a temp (before I bought the cream). Has been full of beans and begging to go out!

have a look at\link{http://www.nhs24.com/html/content/g_ency_info.asp?page=s2_11&articleID=97\this}
we are suffering chicken pox too but only 9 months old - any advice to help stop the scratching at this age. Thanks. Nhs 24 says 5 days after rash appears they can return to school but some schools do have a policy on this so best check if they do.

onelife · 06/05/2006 22:33

socks on hands, babygrow over the top.

Dior · 07/05/2006 12:01

He still only has about 15 spots. Is this because the infection can get worse over a few days, or because he might have it only mildly? I had it really mildly when I was about 7, and then really badly when I was 11.

Oh dear - dd has just come out in a rash this morning, following a couple of days of fever with no cold symptoms. Its more of a pinprick rash at the moment, on her back, stomach, behind her ears and round her hairline. Does this sound like Chicken pox? (There has been a case at nursery in the last few weeks). She is 10 months, will she be old enough for the piriton liquid (before I rush out to get it) or will Medised help as I know it has antihistamine in it?

Sorry for the hijack! Blush Smile

Cherylynne · 07/05/2006 15:19

hi i phone the doctor about the piriton liquid and was told no for under 1 year old - something to do with liver/kidney function.

My elder son had a pinprick rash on part of his back but the other spots were clearly chicken pox blister. 3 day is usually the worst.

Cherylynne · 07/05/2006 15:20

thanks onelife - baby grow, sock and micropore tape i think should do it. Grin

shellybelly · 07/05/2006 19:47

was going to post about CPox as I think dd has it and having read the thread my post would be identical to mandymacs, as my dd is 10mths and has the rash/spots behind ears neck back and stomach and it looks like its coming up on her face too, she started with a fever and no other symptoms so i thought it was teething and the rash has appeared today, I'm going to ring the docs tomorrow to make sure its definitely CPox

Dior · 09/05/2006 12:55

Well, my poor little pickel is abso-bloody-lutely covered in spots. He is going to be lucky to escape with a few scars the way he is scratching in his sleep Sad. He's very poorly too, but is at least sleeping during the day for at least an hour. I'm getting cabin fever though!
