Is there a maximum size of blood clot in a period before you start to panic? I swear my actual womb fell out this week...

I used to get huge, liverish pieces about the size of the palm of my hand [boak].

Eased off when I went on the pill.

BrittaPerry · 07/03/2013 21:59

What did you use to, er, catch them? Mine this week weren't that big but they would have filled a mooncup.

The feeling as one comes out. Vomit.

Oh it's grim isn't it? I was using tampons at the time (this is years ago) and they never came out anywhere but on the loo, so it wasn't a worry from that point of view.

It huuuuurt though Sad

frogspoon · 07/03/2013 22:07

Big clots mean you are bleeding very heavily, if it continues you should see a doctor. I used to get very heavy bleeding with massive clots, I now take medication which reduces the bleeding

Read this for more info about heavy periods and clotting (webmd)

BrittaPerry · 07/03/2013 22:07

I bleed through two night time pads an hour when it is heavy, so I don't trust tampons as I can't see them. Also, cotton wool gives me the heebie jeebies.

Sigh. I wish they had just whipped the lot out when I had DD2.

Transxemic acid and mef - something - acid make it better, and iron tablets make me feel less dead, but I still get this crap about every other month.

I don't want to do anything hormonal, as I am finally mentally stable for the first time since puberty and I always got worse when I stopped breastfeeding etc so it definitely has hormonal links, and the pill interacts with my meds apparently too, and I'm single anyway...

ARGH. Mother nature HATES ME.

Oh, I used to use pads too (and one memorable time used 2 superplus tampons at once, plus pad and that lasted about an hour), but the clots didn't seem to end up in the pad. Mooncup would do the same job.

I've been really lucky in that by the time I got into my 20s even being off the pill didn't seem to bring back the hideousness. I quite fancy trying a coil though after ds2 is born but am very wary of the heavy periods side effects.

frogspoon · 07/03/2013 22:17

Britta, I take tranexamic and mefenamic acid too, and they help me quite alot.

I now get normal heavy periods where I can actually wear a night pad all night without leaking, and can actually teach for a couple of hours without worrying about leaks. I used to have periods as heavy as yours, so being able to have manageable ones is amazing.

If you are taking these medications and its still too heavy you need to go back to the dr.

Are they very painful too? If so you might consider endometriosis.

cocolepew · 07/03/2013 22:22

Try taking 200mg of magnesium everyday it can help with heavy periods.

BrittaPerry · 07/03/2013 22:23

The weird thing is that mine have got heavier over the last year. I'm 28 and my youngest child is 3 and stopped being breastfed two years ago.

I had heavy periods as a teenager but they seemed to calm down. But then I was terrible at being pregnant - name the side effect, I had it. My womb basically got slashed to bits having the babies and so I've been told I can't have more. Plus I'm hairy, like a man. Basically the only thing my hormones can do properly is get and stay pregnant and breastfeed, and I can't even do that any more because my stupid body managed to mess up giving birth so spectacularly. Even my previously huge sex drive has almost completely evaporated.

...and breathe...

Oh, and I have wrinkles AND spots. So I don't even get any time between the two of having good skin. Bastarding bastard.

same here. I was offered tranxsemic acid but I thought it still has to come out doesnt it so havent taken it plus was a bit freaked by the side effects. But some days its like giving birth to huge clots.
Glad I am not alone however.

gimmeanaxe · 07/03/2013 22:34

and this has been going on for several years now. For days 1 and 2 I cant leave the house and nights 1 and 2 must get up several times plus sleep on a towel Sad

BrittaPerry · 07/03/2013 22:36

I must admit to not really understanding how it works...if the blood is already there waiting for a hypothetical baby, where does it go if it doesn't come out? Because you only take the drugs when the period has started, so how do they work?

OP posts:
gimmeanaxe · 07/03/2013 22:40

my thoughts exactly. Plus I'm on major migraine and epilepsy drugs and they seemed a no-no with wotsit acid. I cant wait for the menopause. Its hard explaining why you cant go out. IIt really is that bad.

BrittaPerry · 07/03/2013 22:58

Do they interact with epilepsy drugs? I'm hoping the doctor looked at that, because my bipolar medication is originally designed for epilepsy :-/

OP posts:
gimmeanaxe · 07/03/2013 23:02

there's a website you can check but my neuro said no. What you on? Mine is topiramate (topamax)

frogspoon · 07/03/2013 23:08

gimmeanaxe, what side effects were you worried about? Surely they cannot be worse than being unable to leave the house and having to sleep on a towel as your periods are so heavy.

I have had no side effects to either medication so far. I'm on no other medication so have no interactions but your doctor should know if it's safe to take them with your current medication.

BrittaPerry · 07/03/2013 23:20

Lamotrigine. It is a miracle worker. I went from being told to give up on the idea of ever working or studying again to being one of the most stable people I know.

OP posts:
gimmeanaxe · 08/03/2013 17:28

the neuro was worried about strokes with the interactions of the epilepsy and migraine meds.

frogspoon · 08/03/2013 19:51

Ah ok gimmeanaxe, sorry you didn't explain that before. Obviously your neuro knows best.

Which is why you should see them or a gyno to find the cause of your problem discuss alternative medication or other treatment (ablation, hysterectomy).

gimmeanaxe · 09/03/2013 10:15

I have asked for a hysterectomy but they seem reluctant as I'm nearing 50. I think they think it will all stop soon anyhow. I wish it would hurry up!
