Suspected Rotavirus in 9 mo, is milk ok?

My ds has had leaky nappies for a few days, very poo-ey and sounds liquid when you hear it, but of course the nappy absorbs the liquid so doesn't look so bad when you change it. He was fine in himself, so I wasn't too worried about him until last night when he vomited violently all of his bottle. Did the same with a bf this morning. Rang GP who said there's a rotavirus bug around at the mo. He said to give diluted full sugar squash and small meals, but said no and then yes to milk when he saw my son's age.

Any advice gratefully received

Feed as normal. Be prepared to give smaller feeds, more often than normal - little and often is easier on the digestion.

Keep an eye on DS for signs of dehydration and get back in touch with your GP immediately if you have any concerns.

Rotavirus is very common and highly infectious. Take extra handwashing precautions.

My (then) 7 months old DS had Rotavirus at the start of the year and my v good GP told us to STOP the milk until his nappies had cleared up. BF is apparently OK but I was bottle feeding by then and apparently formula is too strong. We were allowed to offer him 1/4 strength formula which he would drink so we just gave him diluted juice. It did work but was quite a struggle getting through the week....

2 of mine had this quite badly and I called a halt to the milk as it was just coming straight back. Was bf youngest girl and kept this up tho it did come back as well. Poor you - can be nasty.

The advice I posted is the advice given by epidemiologists and microbiologists. GPs are notorious for giving advice about weaker strength formula milk and I have heard many midwives get angry about it. You are not supposed to mess with the formula of the formula so to speak.

Little and often of ordinary strength milk is preferable to regular size feeds of weaker stuff.

DD1 had rotavirus at that age. After hours GP - why do these things always happen at night? - said no formula milk till she'd gone 24 hours w/o diarrhea. Just juice diluted w/cool boiled water and/or Dioralyte.

The good news is that it's usually a fast bug in kids - 48 hours or so.

stgeorge my gp, or dd's gp, said same about half strength milk. Shock he also never said it was rotavirus, just a virus. bloody docs are rubbish (apart from one) where we are

Most of hte time, they'll say gastroenteritis, but nearly 100% of the human population will get a rotavirus or a noravirus in their lives, so it's likely the culprit.
