DD1 has been throwing up since the middle of last night. She now obviously has nowt left in her stomach. I know they say you say you should fast when you've got a stomach bug, but she is now just bringing up bile, and it is hurting her throat. Should I give her a piece of dry bread or something or is she best left as she is?

Ages ago a doctor told me no need to starve a child who was throwing up and to give them what they feel they want within reason of course. I must say I no longer worry about giving them food if they want it but they have only every wanted a small amount to start with and it must be when they are over it as they don't seem to want more. (Having said all that I'd phone NHS direct or docs receptionist if unsure.) Hope your child is over it now.

flat lemonade? I wouldn't give her anything to eat if she's still throwing up, but flat lemonade has sugar in it so she won't keel over

Maybe a rice cake?

I am a fan of rich tea biscuits for this purpose

Thanks all. Yes, I had heard that flat Lemonade was good, never knew why though!! Unfortunately she is still throwing up Sad, at the moment though she is having a sleep, which I am glad about as she hardly slept last night. Will play it by ear with the food then and see how she feels when she wakes up. Also, sorry to sound so dim, but when do you give diarolyte (sp?) is that to be given after it's all over? thanks.

Dioarlyte is just to replace fluids so can be given anytime, my kids won't have it cos it tastes pretty vile.

Has she caught the bug off your sister's kid (seen the other thread)

Very likely!!Angry

Flat lemonade is supposed to do the same job as dioralyte.

dd1 timed our bank holiday yesterday to perfection and puked all morning, grrrrreat.

I gave her sips of water as I found that it hurt her more to bring up bile than have something in her stomach.

But I am not a doctor so this may be wrong but she was really upset so it felt right anyway.

Dh disagreed and glared from the kitchen.

She was fine at 3pm ish when it was too late to go anywhere! Tsk.

Agree on the RIch tea biscuits, or dry cracker.

My ds has been like this since sunday afternoon (after the tea party for he's db 1st birthday), but i got very concerned as he had bumped his head at nursery on friday which came up in a big lumpShock
Well me being worrind means contacting nhs direct, who advices me to attend a&e (just to be safe) as no doctor available on bank holiday monday. So dp and i spent our ds2 1st birthday at the hospital whilst ds2 stayed with gp and my sisters (and there kids), whilst we spent 5 hours there to be told its a bug thats going about! (i was not too happyAngry) and asked if i could discharge ds1 so we could spend the rest of the day with his brother, well that took them over an hour to sort outAngryAngryAngry

Well i was adviced to give him anything to drink, dilute juice, apple juice, and they even gave me some dyralyte(sp??) for him.
He was fine all day today, and was eating fine and drinking loads and just before bed time it all came back up (sorry if tmi)

I hope your dd is better now, because i know how horrid it can be looking after a sick child (and difficult trying to entertain another at the same time!)

dioralyte is a mxute of electrolytes, it is specially formulated to replace the salts ( and sugars) the body looses through vomitting. You use it to replace fluid and electolytes.
Give 10 mls of fluid every 10 mins alternate between water and diorlyte soution. It is not the same to give lemonade. although this does help to bos the bodies blood sugar. you can make up you own fluid replacment solution withsome diluted fresh orange and a tiny pinch of salt.
A wee ones mouth is so vascular that they can absorb some of what they need from their mouths whichis shy it is important to give little and often. Dont worry about the food to much, keep the fluids up.

Hope thing improve for you.
