losing power in one hand

Recently I have begun losing power in my left wrist (I am left-handed). I've always, for as long as I can remember, had problems with fine motor control early on in the day, but it's starting to affect how I can open bottles, that sort of thing.

I cannot face going to the doctor and saying 'I have a tickly hand and sometimes can't open bottles' but at the same time I am slightly concerned and can't really find anything similar via google.

Does anyone know what I mean?

Do you get pins and needles in that hand?

Passthesaltdear · 24/02/2013 21:42

Defo go to doctors

Hi Stephanie. I am sure the doctor won't dismiss you're concerns offhand. Any loss of a previously easy skill is always worth discussing with your GP.

I don't get pins and needles, no.
It's like if I think hard, I can use it, but it really tickles to try to do fine-motor stuff. Until recently.
It isn't permanent, it improves through the day.
It's bound to be some boring sort of nerve thing - unless it's MS or something - which I can't find anything to say that it might be. Urgh.

why wouldn't you go to the doctor?? I do think you need some advice when an important skill suddenly becomes (more) problematic. Are you hesitating because of anxiety about what you might be told or because of anxiety about "bothering" the GP.

You must go to the doctor, I went with exactly this and arthritis was the initial diagnosis, partly due to symptoms and partly family history. My precise complaint was that I could not run a brush through my hair or open jars or bottles, so I am totally with you on this one!!!! It was taken seriously, so do not worry on that front.

I had tests etc, which fortunately ruled out arthritis in the end, but instead discovered acute tendinitis running right through from my hand to my shoulder via a very painful elbow. It was causing me much weakness and pain but with simple treatment and caution on my part it is vastly improved.

I hate going to the doctor. I have known many doctors and whilst they are very nice, they do all say that they have no time for patients bothering them with non-specific complaints. And mine is non-specific, very! I'm being a wuss though.

Happily I don't have any pain. Glad you got that sorted Smile
