Wheezing with cough and fever: doctor or not?

I've never wheezed before but when I breath in it sort if whistles/crackles. And I have a terrible cough and fever. I'd normally leave a cough and fever but the wheeze is worrying me. Can it be a normal part of a cold or is it a sign of infection?

Sadly I can't take much as I'm 28 weeks pregnant.

As this is a new sympton for you (and you are pregnant) I would see the doctor. As its Saturday (and GPs are closed) perhaps check with NHS direct?

Norem · 23/02/2013 20:43

Go and get checked tonight, there is a lot of flu around and pregnant women are more at risk of complications.
You might not need anything but it is worth being seen.
Take some pjs and a book just in case. X

The crackling and the fever probably mean chest infection, def go and get it checked out. You'll be OK to take antibiotics for it, I had the same when PG.

Thanks. I have not been to the out of hours service because it is horrible and I have an obstetrician appointment at 9am tomorrow morning so I am trying to hold out. The fever is a better but the whistling wheeze is constant with every breath and the cough sounds awful. I am hoping that the reduced fever means it is not an infection and the awful sound on breathing is just a weird side effect of being pregnant and having a bad cough/cold.

Get it checked, wheezing is an indicator of reduced lung function and not to be messed with. Don't wait until tomorrow.

Artichook · 24/02/2013 15:04

Really? Get checked today? Out of hours is nasty, security screens everywhere, miles away, last time we went we all picked up a vomiting virus.

Surely if I had a bad infection the fever would not be getting so much better (I kind of know you are right but I really, really don't want to go to out of hours when Noro is still doing the rounds).

Can you call for advice?

MousyMouse · 24/02/2013 15:46

go and get checked. wheezing is really unpleasant and you might need an inhaler.

and being pregnant does not mean you can't take medicines.
don't let the dr fob you off!
many many medicines are safe to use esp if you use them carefully for a limited time.

1991all · 24/02/2013 15:49

I've had the same thing for 2 weeks now
Gp said it was a virus
No antibiotics

Showtime · 24/02/2013 22:45

Had similar, recurring since NYear.
GP checked lungs, said I was right to make appointment and gave advice but no meds or further action.

magso is exactly right. If you're ever in doubt about where you should go, you should call NHS Direct on 0845 46 47.
