Hi all..am a little concerned about the seeming lack of education re whooping cough. I have this delightful (NOT) and debilitating disease at the moment , I am in my 40s, had the vaccination as a child, AND the illness when i was 7 years old now have it again. Apparently my doctor says there is a spike in the amount of cases at the moment but they aren't sure why. They DO think that the vaccine DOESN'T last a lifetime, as they previously thought, and the disease may have mutated. Also, far more people probably have had whooping cough/have it now and are merrily spreading their germs about (it's VERY infectious) because doctors aren't recognising it (my doctor actually said this) If you are diagnosed in the early stages then you can have antibiotics which will stop the bacterium increasing, and spreading further. However, unfortunately you have to ride the disease out, which is probably why it's also known as the 100 day cough. You DON'T nessassarily whoop with it, the cough just turns you inside out, and babies oftne don't whoop.
Why hasn't this been in the news much? When I've told people I have whooping cough they can't believe it, people seem to think it's a childs disease and isn't prevalent today. My daughter's colleagues laughed and asked if I'd been visiting the Middle Ages?! (they won't laugh if they get it!)
Please look it up, (\www.nhs.uk/conditions/whooping-cough/pages/introduction.aspx)
and lets try and get educated about whooping cough...I wouldn't wish it on anyone and it is VERY scarey struggling to take a breath whilst coughing, being sick because you are struggling so much.
