Any Drs or Radiologist about? Toddler still not walking after a week +

My DS (2yrs, 4 months) fell over on the 7th February. We all had terrible colds at the time and had been playing fine before the fall. He was playing upstairs with DD (5) and I was in the shower. I didn't see the fall. DD said he tripped on the edge of the car playmat and fell onto the centre of the rug.

My DD called out 'He's fallen over' and I shouted back 'DS, come to mummy to rub it better'. He couldn't stand up to come to me. I immediately left the shower and went to pick him up. He couldn't put any weight on his left leg. He was shaking in pain and crying.

I took him to A&E straight away to get it checked. They took a lower leg Xray but not a hip as the Radiographer thought it was excessive and his pain appeared to be in the lower leg. The Xray was clear. The Dr said it was probably shock and as DS was very difficult to examine they would leave it and see how it goes as the Xray was clear. I went home and was advised that if he was still not walking tomorrow to bring him back and they would do the upper-leg Xray.

Cue not walking the next day I returned to the hospital and we had the upper-let Xray taken. There was still nothing to be seen. The Dr, this time, was able to review DS much more and could see he was in intense pain and would not bear any weight. I was given the same advice regarding there was no obvious injury and DS should pick up. I was told to give him maximum painkillers to ensure he wasn't in pain and encourage him to walk on it.

Wait until Sunday 10th February and still not walking. DS has started to walk on his knees at this point to get himself about. It is obviously causing him pain but at least this way he is mobile. Back to A&E and they perform a foot Xray but this is also clear and we are told its just DS being reluctant and he will start moving shortly. Told that A&E don't want to see us anymore and any other upset to see our GP.

Wait until 13th February to give DS a chance to start walking again and he won't. Go to GP who said that A&E is where they 'know their stuff' and that he will start walking soon. We are told that we should be making him walk about and 'really encouraging him to move, even if it appears to hurt.' Hmm

Anyway, fast forward to today and DS is still not walking. He has stood on his foot whilst we have encouraged him to move about but his foot points outwards and his leg shakes as soon as he starts to try to move it. He has taken approx 20 steps since the injury and these are all fully supported whilst on maximum ibuprofen and paracetamol. He complains as soon as his pain medications are wearing out that his 'leg hurts mummy.' Sad

We are in London and have private healthcare once referred. We are aiming to get a referral to someone today as I am just not happy with the treatment or lack of diagnosis. My questions are:

  1. Who or what department would be the best to push for a referral to?
  2. Has anyone any experience or suggestions as to how DH and I can help?
  3. Anything that I might have missed?

Sorry it's long but any help at this point would be greatly appreciated.

Bump. I'm at the hospital now.

He needs to see an orthopaedic specialist.

Maybe there is a soft tissue/ligament injury - this would not show up on an xray.

Sounds awful.

Hope you get to the bottom of it today.

We are back from the hospital. DS is in a full length leg cast. He has a toddler fracture. We have an orthopaedic appointment for Saturday to review care ongoing. He is in less pain already.

Well done for being persistent. Your poor DS. Sad XX

FancyPuffin · 18/02/2013 15:28

Shock Thank goodness you were persistent.

Poor ds hope he heals up quickly and feels better soon.

I'm glad we kept pushing it. At least he is getting the right treatment now.

I just feel annoyed that we didn't put our foot down harder in the beginning. Still, he is much happier with it protected and is slowly getting used to have a huge purple leg.

Thanks for all your thoughts.
