gastroenteritis & the fussy child

sansouci · 28/04/2006 11:05

Dd has had gastro for 2 days & refuses to eat anything but stuff that's not going to help her (she will only eat toast if it has butter on it, for example). She hasn't been sick or had diarohea for 24 hrs but is now v. weak & has been asleep all morning. Any suggestions?

if she been ok for 24 hours then id give her toast with a TINY scraping of butter on!

LIZS · 28/04/2006 11:32

When I was recovering form GE the gp said to eat whatever I fancied, and not exclude dairuy specifically, so a smear of butter is probably fine. Probiotics are good for restoring the gut function too.

Dd had a little bread & butter with a bit of ham at lunch yesterday but was sick again late last night. She's now lying wanly on the sofa, watching Winx. She says her tummy hurts. Seems truly in a bad way. Help.

Will she take some fluids like lucazade? That should give her a burst of energy. I'd let her have the butter. Some of the goodness will be absorbed by the stomach before the next puking session.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 29/04/2006 19:00

Two of my three have just been hospitalised with gastroenteritis. We were told that as long as they weren't being sick they could have whatever they fancied.

sansouci · 29/04/2006 21:31

How long should I wait before taking her to the doc? She's drinking so not dehydrated but soooo listless! very worrying.

urgent bump

OP posts:
jalopy · 29/04/2006 21:52

what is she drinking, sansouci?

sansouci · 29/04/2006 21:56

water, clear soup, flat coke & ice tea (flat coke recommended by doctor from a previous gastro crisis). No milk or dairy products.

Poor thing. How old is she?

sansouci · 29/04/2006 22:02

She's almost 6. Usually can never sit still, full of life & talks hind leg off a donkey. Thin, too. my experience with gastro & kids is that it lasts a day or so & is over as suddenly as it started. but it's not happening that way with poor little dd.Sad

Not much fun at this time of night. Your best bet, if you are really concerned, would be to ring NHS direct. Does she have a temperature or pain anywhere?

sansouci · 29/04/2006 22:09

No access to NHS direct, unfortunately! She complains of pain directly over her navel. I prodded her tummy to see if it hurt anywhere else & to see if it was supple. so far so good. he temp is normal or slightly higher than normal -- 37.5.

Can't give you professional advice but if it were me I would keep a close eye on her overnight. Check that her temperature isn't rising and her pain is getting worse. Give her lots of fluids, make sure she's weeing adequately. Maybe another night's sleep will make a difference to her energy levels.

jalopy · 29/04/2006 22:20

*pain isn't getting worse!

sansouci · 29/04/2006 22:21

Thank you, jalopy. There are times when i don't know what i'd do without MN!

OP posts:
chapsmum · 29/04/2006 22:25

how are you doing now sansouci?
Will she drink anything??
My mum used to get us to sook ice cubes through a clean tea towel. or even dip a clean muslin in some diluted fresh orange.
She is probably too scared to take a big gulp.
Dont worry dso much about the food but drink is the most important thing, how old is she???

sansouci · 29/04/2006 22:29

She's sleeping. She sleeps a lot. She was better this morning & stupidly i let her go to a birthday party. she didn't eat anything but said she had trouble playing!

bless her wee cotton socks!!!
Sound as if she is on the right road anyway. Hope she continues to improve for you.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 29/04/2006 23:05

Sansouci - lasted 6 days for my kids SadI took them on day 3 to the GP - they are teenagers so later than you should wait I think.

sansouci · 30/04/2006 00:29

I just went down to have a check on dd & her pj top was hitched up (because she likes to snuffle on her sleeve at night) and I could see her hip-bones jutting out & actually count her ribs. she's so emaciated! horrified. can't sleep.

Aaww sansouci - dd has lost 7 lbs this week - and she's already underweight. Thankfully she seems to be eating normally as of yesterday.

Hope your dd feels much better soon.

jalopy · 30/04/2006 09:05

How's your little one this morning, sansouci?

sansouci · 01/05/2006 10:01

I was so exhausted after having worried about dd non-stop since last wednesday night that I didn't come on MN yesterday to say that dd woke up in much better shape. She went back to school this morning but is still eating next to nothing.

I've now got so much work to do since I didn't do any last week but so far have been slumped, glassy-eyed, in front of the box.

Thanks to all who replied to my frightened posts. Smile
