Thrush - help!!!!

My DS (4 months) had what I thought was terrible nappy rash but the doctor has told me it is thrush and has prescribed canestan cream. I have checked his mouth and can't find any white stuff there but he does have a real problem with b/feeding (and always has). He just seems very uncomfortable and comes on and off all the time. I never had this problem with my older child. Could he have oral thrush as well? If so, how do I find out? I have no symptons but I know that I need to be treated as well if he does have it. My doctor loves prescriptions - eg I went in with the rash and came out with two prescriptions for cradle cap which has never bothered me and which I didn't raise! - so I'm sure he would be happy to prescribe stuff for oral thrush but I don't want to treat ds for something he doesn't have.

Also I know that thrush is a nightmare to get rid off. My doctor has told me that I shouldn't use the cream for more than 3 weeks (hope it clears up by then). Any tips for keeping it away or will I just have to keep using the cream until he's out of nappies and is it bad to keep using the cream? We use cloth nappies at the moment but I change them very frequently and wash at 60C.

You can use nystatin in his mouth and 1% clotrimazole cream on your breasts to be on the safe side - wipe it off carefully before feeding him.
I should wash his nappies in as hot water as you can - 60 is probably hot enuf but the hotter the better. Thrush is fungus, so it loves damp dark places, so lots of air to his bum (and your nipples if you think you have it - draw the curtains first ) and keep the areas dry.
Usual hygiene otherwise.

Repeated thrush can be treated with oral antifungal tablets too, but not sure about the contraindications on these. Chances are, a few days with his nappy cream and that will be the end of it

good luck!
