Severe Nappy Rash

mairimac · 28/04/2006 07:24

My lo has developed a really bad nappy rash. I've been using sudocream at every nappy change but it's making no difference at all. This morning it has become worse and an area is looking like an open wound and is weeping. I'm very desperate to heal it up but don't know what else to try. Help Please!

Metanium. Only thing that works. From the pharmacy counter.

carla · 28/04/2006 07:28

God, that sounded curt, sorry. xx Hope it works.

anchovies · 28/04/2006 07:38

Agree metanium, also no nappy as much as possible. Possible you will need a mild steroid or an anti fungal though so don't give it too long before going to the docs.

CantSleepWontSleep · 28/04/2006 07:40

Hi Carla - interested in your response here, as my DD has also had bad nappy rash for weeks. We've been using clotrimazole (canesten without the brand name!) prescribed by my doc for 5 weeks, but only a tiny patch has healed. Is metanium better than that - going near a boots this morning so will pop in and get some if you think so.

picnikel · 28/04/2006 07:43

Metanium rocks!

Are there lots of bright red patches/spots? If so there's probably fungal infection so use canestan. When dd had it really badly I used canestan HC - it has some mild steroid in it & it cleared it up really fast. Would echo Anchovies - if in doubt get GP or HV to check it esp if there is a weepy bit.

HTH!

CantSleepWontSleep · 28/04/2006 07:45

Sounds like I should take DD to the docs again, as hers has bright red weepy bits in still.

Sorry to gatecrash your thread mairimac - sounds like maybe you should take your lo to the docs too. Hope it gets better soon.

GarfieldsGirl · 28/04/2006 07:45

mairimac - probably should go to docs, canesten worked well for my ds1. Also I've found with ds2 if you use the johnsons stripey wipes they're fab as they have nappy cream in them, I don't even have to use sudoream or anything for him and his bums fine.

picnikel · 28/04/2006 07:47

Cantsleepwontsleep - since we atrted using metanium dd has never had a bad nappy rash again. Usually I don't put anything on her but if there's any redness or early signs of rash - on goes the metanium and it calms down immediately. A word of warning - a little goes a looong way!! The first time I squeezed out what I thought was a decent amount; I swear I could have coated the whole of dd from the neck down! You need a teeny bit on your finger tip Smile.

mairimac · 28/04/2006 08:01

Thanks, will pick up som metanium and see if that helps. He had a tummy upset recently and had to switch to Soy formula temporarily (I hope) and is soiling his nappy three four times a day, although solid. I change frequently but always sleeps through night and wakes up dirty:-(
How long should I wait to see if metanium works?

OP posts:
louismummy · 28/04/2006 08:39

metanium didn't work for us. ds was pooing about 7-9 times a day . v. loose. used cotton wool and waterand timodinr from gp. which has hydrocortisone and anti fungal in. and tried to leave his nappy off as much as poss

carla · 28/04/2006 08:50

CSWS - dd2 is 6 now, so there may be some better things on the market/prescription. But I do know Metanium was the only thing that worked for me. HTH.

carla · 28/04/2006 08:51

I did take her to the GP about it, btw, and reassuringly she said it's nothing to do with how often you change their nappy.

biglips · 28/04/2006 09:13

my dd had a severe nappy rash one time (looks like someone pours boiling water over her privates!!) so everyone on here recommended metanium - fab stuff as its like a thick chalk cream and its a barrier... its cleared up most of it miracly overnite! but took 3 days before completely cleared up

biglips · 28/04/2006 09:14

oh use cotton and lukewarm water - steer clear from any types of wipes

biglips · 28/04/2006 09:15

oh another thing.... i bathed my DD everyday before she went to bed at nite (no bubbles only clear water)

jellyjelly · 28/04/2006 09:17

I use bepanthem on the kids bums and it is great. Good for when yu are feeding too.

lilstarry1 · 28/04/2006 20:25

Would reiterate what Biglips said, was talking to someone at a Real Nappy forum the other day (she's been a MW for 17 years), she told me almost all the babies she knew who had nappy rash were being cleaned with wipes! Apparently they can get any stain out of a carpet Shock...

Cotton wool and water is fine, although I find it sticks to DD bits! I'm not sure whether your LO is in reusables/disposables, and I don't wish to be seen to be pushing my opinions BUT can only be honest about my experiences.. DD is a very pooey baby, and when she was in disposables she had awful nappy rash! I switched over to cloth and her nappy rash has all but gone.

If you'd like a link to an e-bay shop selling reusable wipes I'll happily post it here, I also have a recipe for a good bum-cleaning formula!

mairimac · 29/04/2006 11:37

lilstarry1 - what are re-useable wipes? I'd love you recipe for bum cleaning. I bought the metanium ointment yesterday and started using it immediately. The rash seems drier this morning and not weeping, DS seems happier for me to clean too. However find it hard to clean off the metanium ointment? If we are to clean at each nappy change that means the ointment too - but can't seem to get it off easy with cotton wool and water!

Oh I forgot to say, I think it's OJ that caused his nappy rash. Mainly because the doc suggested giving to him as he was constipated and also because the nappy rash is only between the cheeks and nowhere else. Is this possible. Have stopped the OJ but is now constipated again!

Just off to bed, I'll try and remember to post the recipe tomorrow morning.

Reusable wipes are simply pieces of square fabric (normally fleece) that can be used with water/special formula to keep babies bum clean! They go in the wash and are fairly economical! You can get all sorts of colours/patterns! They are brilliant as you know exactly what is going near your LO's bum!

Yorkiegirl · 29/04/2006 21:25

definitely go to the docs and check its not thrush.
DD2 suffers with bad nappy rash and has had huge ulcerated areas in the past. We ended up using prilon spray on cream as touching it to apply cream made it worse. Timodene is good when its not as bad as that.
Bathe with cotton wool dipped in cooled camomile tea. Much better than plain water.
Hope LO's bot is better soon.

mairimac · 30/04/2006 07:16

Thanks to everyone for your advice. The metanium has worked wonders. This morning his nappy rash is all but gone and his skin is looking good. Thanks again.

eidsvold · 30/04/2006 14:30

to help it wipe off more easily - mix the sudocrem with the metanium - easier to get off.

as to teh constipation - a little brown sugar in warm water works well - used that with dd1 when she was having massive doses of diuretics and was terribly constipated.

The only time my 2 have ahd bad nappy rash is when they have been on antibiotics and it is a thrush rather than straight nappy rash... although dd1 did also have it when in hospital and they had to give her a special formula - full strength jsut made her poo for the universe - changed nappy very frequently - on the hour or half hour and she still ended up with weepy sore bottom.... metanium and sudocrem cleared it up in no time.

I use reusable wipes with my 2. Either chamomile tea steeped and cooled or 2 tbsp baby cleaner - what ever you use in the bath, 1 tbsp olive oil, 2 cups boiling water... then just pour it into a wipes container - like a pampers one or a tupperware container, throw in washers, cut up towels, flannette squares - whatever you use. Once cool - ready to go.

lilstarry1 · 30/04/2006 15:29

Happy Bum Solution:

125ml boiling water
1 camomile tea bag
3 drops of lavender oil
1 tablespoon sweet-almond oil OR good vegetable oil
1 teaspoon baby bath/bath shampoo (this can be left out if it dries babies skin)

Optional : 1 teaspoon of honey (extra soothing but make sure baby doesn't have thrush as the honey will 'feed' it!)
You can add different essential oils, but make sure they are baby friendly!

We make ours up, store one lot in a little bottle which goes about with us, and the rest in the fridge. It normally makes more than you use, but still works out cheaper than wet-wipes! It has no preservatives in it so does tend to need replacing weekly (sometimes sooner!)

sarahinphuket · 30/04/2006 17:46

cornflour - yes the stuff you cook with! apply like talc - rub on a little bit at bedtime, and I have always found that by morning the nappy rash has almost cleared up.

I swear by this - it was always better on my DD than any of the creams from the chemists
