and was seen by GP yesterday who said couldn't find anything wrong with him - "non-specific" "probably viral".

it's now all over his body and face and the spots are quite red and blotchy.

are rashes quite common in babies (ds is 11mo)?

he's been really grumpy for the last couple of days, but that may well be teething - can see a 3rd tooth just emerging.

If you are worried then you should always get it checkedbut a rash is a common in a baby with a virus.

Tutter · 26/04/2006 18:00

It is very common for kids to get all sorts of rashes along with a virus. The most common is one that looks like nettle rash, it is called urticharia. You can give him medised wich has an antihistamine in it which may help. Otherwise keep him nice and cool. Dont be allarmed if it comes back again if he is hot etc

rashes are indeed very common

but if you're worried get it checked out .. because its impossible to diagnose over the internet

sorry I'm not more helpful

chapsmum · 26/04/2006 18:06

did the GP see his rash, thought he had. sorry may have mis-interpreted you?
If not phone NHS 24 for some advice, if he has already seen it and your wee one is other wise well, it is probably just viral, however you could still phone if you are worried.

i personally always do the 'glass test', then step the worrying down a gear, as it always blanches, then get my mum to have a look at it!

ds1 was always covered in blotches and rashes. it may be worth getting it checked again tho as when my son was born he was in hosp for the first 2 weeks and got all sorts of rashes etc, as newborns do, and the nurses were always fretting about them and getting the docs to look at them. hence i always do the glass test- maybe they put the fear opf god up me? i dont know.
it just puts my mind at ease.
:)

thanks all. glass test OK, and yes, GP already seen him. but rash much worse now - more dramatic looking!

but he's alert, active and otherwise well (apart from a cough - may be related??) so i'll try to relax.

rashes very common in babies. I ignore rashes totally and go by how ill the child is.

Tutter - my DD has a similar sounding rash at the moment. She's 15 months and it came up last Sunday. Did the glass test which was ok, called local medical oncall centre and nurse said to give piriton which didn't really help.

Eventually got a doctor appointment and he said probably viral (the usual!!) or it could be eczema (DD has dry skin but I KNOW this wasn't eczema) he prescribed oilatum for bath.

Temperature was ever so slightly up. She has also been off her food and a bit grumpy. Think also she may have another molar coming throught which doesn't help. The rash was raised and pin prick- a bit like nettle rash but by time dr seen it it had faded a bit. now a week on and its fading. Still non the wiser but having read this thread i I feel a little more reassured! Hope your DS ok now.

My DS had a similar rash. GP said it was normal and showed he'd just 'got over' at bit of a virus. Very common I think.

mjp185 · 29/04/2006 21:53

Hand , foot and mouth is doing the rounds at school.

My DS1 had a letter sent home saying it was at his school, DS2 got it but he is at a different school! passed on subclinically apparentley

Tiny pin prick spots all over inc palms and soles.
DS2 knees were covered

Also mouth ulcers and sore throat.

Theres no Tx but calpol/infant ibuprofen and lots of ice lollies

Rarely seen in adults, lots in schools....

DS2 is 3 bt the way!

Hope he is better soon xxxxxxxx

My ds also has a rash right now. He's 22 months and has had it for just over a week. The difference is that he hasn't passed the glass test. Dr's have confirmed that it is not menengitis (although I already knew this). Not sure what it is. I was wondering about nutritional deficiencies (he's multiple food allergic and hates most fruit & veg!

Anyway, my eldest ds ALWAYs seemed to have rash when he was that age. HE was always the rashy child and I felt like I was always at the drs. He often had viral rashes or even just prickly heat.

Try not to worry, although easier said thatn done...I appreciate that!

My Dd had a rash at Christmas, just on her hands and it stayed for 5 weeks. It was really itchy and didn't pass the glass test. Saw loads of docs and had many different diagnosis. We ended up being sent to the hospital as the GPs were baffled but we got the common answer - "probably just a virus".... I think half the time the docs have no idea!
Just go with your instincts as a mum and if you're still worried go see another doctor as they'll probably give you a different answer!!
