7 week old baby SCREAMING - I think it's wind so what can I do?

I suppose it might not be wind but she'll eventually do a big burp and seem a lot happier so I expect it is. She can scream for England and I feel so sorry for her, poor thing. I do always check everything else too but I think the screaming is down to wind. I don't remember ds being this windy (but it was a long time ago!) - so any suggestions anyone? She is bottle fed and we're using SMA Gold and Avent bottles. I do tip the bottle so the teat is full while she's sucking iyswim and I do wind her after/half way through feeding by putting her over my shoulder and patting and rubbing her back. I also try winding her in various positions if that doesn't seem to be working (over my knees, lying down, rocking her a bit etc). MIL (hmm, don't usually believe a word she says) reckons gripe water will help. Will it? Someone else said Infacol (sp?) but I thought I'd ask you lot first before I tried either. I know it'll go eventually but it's pretty distressing for both of us atm. TIA.

hi www.... i use dr. browns bottles for dd.... gives her NO wind... they have a special thingywotsit device in the bottle and i dont knw if its down to them but she has no wind from her bottles... if anything she is more windy from breast (shes mainly bf). I love gripe water... seems to help my dd with wind at both ends! and seems to have aan immediate effect... think you can give it before, during or after a feed... wind is horrid isnt it

jimmychoos · 16/01/2004 14:24

I used to lie DD down along my lap (head on knee) and kind of bicycle her legs, or push her knees to her chest. It always worked to get that wind up!

SenoraPostrophe · 16/01/2004 14:27

Could it be colic, www? (is a lot like wind and with dd did seem to be related to it. I think the general symptoms are screaming more after particular feeds than others and bringing the knees up in pain). If so just changing her milk may help.

Otherwise, can't help much I'm afraid, but lots of sympathy.

Www, I use Dr. Brown's bottles for ds2 and thy're brill. I think most people who've tried them are converted!

Spod · 16/01/2004 14:44

forgot to say... i found infacol didnt work and you can get dr. browns bottles in mothercare and boots... they are about 6quid each though

I tried gripe water, infacol both separately over a period of 5 months - nothing worked and I'm sorry to say my dd STILL has Severe trapped wind/colic. My case is very unusual though so don't panic. Gentle massage is the best relief for my dd. Massage tummy in clockwise motion and I can actually hear all the wind bubbles move down. Homeopathic crystals gave some relief to my dd when she was very young. Chamomillia crystals given on a spoon 20 mins before a feed and u should hear the burps they do! Even from the other end!! I got them from a local chemist who was a homeopathic doctor too. Good Luck!! - it will pass.

I'm another Dr Brown's convert. I had a bad experience of SMA Gold with DD a few years, she had major screaming sessions. I have heard a few people complain say they feel it didn't agree with their babies and caused a lot of wind. Hope things improve for you soon,

WideWebWitch · 16/01/2004 21:35

Thank you very much everyone. She finally calmed down when we went out, maybe the bumping along dislodged the wind or whatever it was. I won't bother with infacol then but I might try changing bottles if it persists.

Have u tried Aptamil milk it is v gentle and there r 3 differnt types. My friends baby had bad colic/wind and she used it with DR brown bottles and he seems to be better now.

Gripe water is good , but I think u can only use it for a short period. It smells of really strong rye bread.

Also hold them face down on your arm supporting the body and then massage tummy. It workd for DD and she calmed down after that.

Good luck

Or you could try a fennel-based herbal remedy called Windypops (from the US, comes in little glass bottle with a dropper) if she has more problems, www. This stuff worked for us when Infacol didn't. Hope it was just a one-off for her and you.
