b/c it's not necessary.

Peachyclair · 24/04/2006 13:21

circumcision doesn't prevent infection, it does however cause pain

it IS available when medical reasosns suggest it would be beneficial

Personally, I don't think Icould put my 3 sons through unnecessaru surgery, a course or two of atibiotics if required (not that it has been, actually, with any of them- I follow the dirty house great immunity rule Wink) has to preferable imo.

hana · 24/04/2006 13:34

because it's not necessary medically.
people have it done for cultural and asthetic reasons

tissy · 24/04/2006 13:37

are you in the UK Hazel? We've never had routine circumcision here. It can be done if necessary(as may be the case with your son)

pooka · 24/04/2006 13:43

Even in the 50's and 60's it wasn't routine. My grandfather was keen for my uncle to be done because (I kid you not) he believed, having been posted in Africa during the war, that if there was another world war my uncle would have been less likely to suffer from sand under the foreskin! In the end uncle got his zipped into his trousers so the job was done in another way altogether. Shock
Wouldn't contemplate it for ds.

I'm guessing it was to save the NHS some money. DH didn't have it done at birth but needed it at age 19. DS1 not done at birth, needed at age 4. DS2? Circumcised at birth, privately, on DH's insistence...

When did they start doing it? Why should the nhs do completely unnecessary painful surgery on babies?

Mercy · 17/09/2006 21:12

Apart from religious/cultural reasons circumsion has not been routinely carried out in the UK AFAIK.

New World, yes. Less so currently

These days it can be done by laser so not necessarily as painful

3littlefrogs · 17/09/2006 21:14

It can be dangerous, is unnecessary and can have longterm complications.
