Gut Problems on Fatty Diet - Help!

If I eat high-fat food (restaurant food) for a few days, my stomach goes wrong. Generally, I throw up, or at least I have horrible diarrhea.

I realise, obviously, that the solution is to avoid having a high-fat diet. I've only had this problem happen three times now, over 12 or so years. I just forget, after a few years, go on holiday, eat restaurant food for a few days, and get really sick.

But I'm wondering how this actually happens? Does anyone else have this problem? Is it a sign of some sort of incipent gut problem? (I have stress-related IBS, but it doesn't trouble me much these days.) Is there any other way I can avoid it, maybe by making sure I always have high-fibre foods on holiday?

it could be something to do with the gall bladder? because if you have your gall bladder removed I think you have to be careful about eating fatty foods

starlover · 23/04/2006 21:36

i think that the gall bladder makes bile, which is used to break down fat.... so if something is wrong with it it may not be doing its job properly

some interesting things \link{http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/diseases/facts/gallbladderdisease.htm\here}

Yeah, I was wondering if it might be a gall bladder problem. I don't generally have an incredibly low-fat diet, and I certainly have no problem at all with having a high-fat meal here or there. It's really just eating fried restaurant food day after day that does me in.

I did mention this problem to my GP, ages ago, and she said, well, then, don't eat like that.

Oh, no, I have no pain at all with this. Well, the normal gut pain associated with diarrhea, but not the sort of pain that page describes.

That's a bit of a relief, actually.

I guess it can't be anything too progressive, as I've had the problem for at least 12 years now, and it hasn't seem to have gotten any worse.

I had the same and was told it was IBS..anyway last year it got really bad so I went private and underwent many tests where they found my pancreas does not produce enough enzymes to digest fatty food...im now on tablets for life everytime i eat...its better but still flares up.... it could be the same as this but I was told its unusual for someone my age (33)

What particular types of high-fat foods?

Dairy, for example, isn't great on the belly. Also, red-meats are v hard to digest.

My brother and mum suffer with ulcerative colitis and its not nice. Am convinced my brothers is very much diet-related, but the crappy gp's he sees would beg to differ.

Hmm, high-meat diets don't seem to bug me much. I am a bit dairy-intolerant, but the symptoms are different (gas, bloating, not surprise diarrhea).

It's really a question of crappy high-fat restaurant food - fried stuff, essentially. I don't go live on fish and chips on holiday, but I end up eating a lot more fried food than at home.

If it kicked up after a single high-fat meal, I'm sure my GP would be more interested.
