my dd has been sick since 4am yesterday morning and managing to drink some water but not keep much down. She hasn't wretched this morning yet after having more water (wont drink Dioralyte) so would like to give her something. Another thread mentioned banana. Chemist said def no dairy at all. Any suggestions - sorry no time to search all the threads...thanks

I would try with some plain biscuits or maybe some toast. Hope your dd feel better soon!

Yes that's right about dairy - you basically want non-fatty things. My tried and tested plan is rich tea biscuits, followed by toast and marmite with no butter, spread out over a day. Then, if they keep those down you can be fairly confident about giving more the following day - again I would stick to toast, biscuits, and maybe some scrambled egg. My mum always used to give us mince and mashed potato, but I've always felt that would be a bit rich.

Hope your dd is better soon. You're right that plenty of water is good. You could put a very little sugar and salt in it if you're worried about dehydration, but I would personally stick to plain water.

Cocoliver - My ds has been vomitting for 5 days. The only thing he could keep down was water and banana. Now he has stopped puking he managed a bit of cereal with semi-skimmed milk. I too was told to avoid dairy but ds was begging cereal and baby bells so I gave in and he kept them down. I was also told to give him Bio Yoghurt which he also kept down. Get the lowfat varieties. It will help her wee tummy deal with food again.

Hope she feels better soon, it's rotten isn't it.

thanks I will give them a try - you always think you know what to give them but then when it comes to it you get a bit nervous of setting it all off again!

Tell me about it! lol... the washing machine is begging for mercy, and our house smells like Dettox! Thankfully, he's better today. We haven't had an 'incident' out of either end for 24 hours.

Farley's rusks. At least if they come back up again they don't taste/smell bad.

cocoliver, definitely no dairy stuff. If your child is keeping water down, dilute a little fresh fruit juice with some sugar in and try that. That will help dehydration and the sugar raises the blood sugar level and gives energy to start the recovery. Stick with that until your DD shows inclination for something more solid but still keep avoiding dairy for at least 24 hours. Banana, mashed potato without butter, plain biscuits. Do not force solids too early, your DD will come to no harm so long as she is getting a little sugar and fluid.

Cocoliver - How old is your dd?

Whenever my two have been poorly, I offer them plain toast or a plain biscuit as has been mentioned before, if that stays down and they are starting to ask for a meal, their first meal is usually, plain grilled chicken breast chopped up and mixed with boiled rice and peas.
