hi, my ds 8 months is teething although there are no signs of any teeth. he has two bottom teeth and seems to be in alot of pain. his cheeks are burning think his temp is up and he is guzzling juice all the time. His sleep at night is all over the place and can be awake for up to 4 hours at night. His nose is running and his skin appears blotchy on his face sometimes. What can i do apart from medicine, calpol, nurofen, medised, anbesol, bonjela...help. Should i get him checked over he is so unhappy

What kind of juice does he drink and how much? Have you tried cutting out the juice for a few days and replacing it with something else? Milk/water/herbal tea?

LynseyM · 23/04/2006 13:50

We have tried water, milk etc, but he seems to refuse these and prefers to guzzle very weak vimto (when i say guzzle, i mean guzzle!!!)
His temp is at 38.5C!
We are giving him Calpol and Neurofen every 4 hours, but is there anything else we can try?

Would he try a teething ring?

PinkTulips · 23/04/2006 14:19

i'd say bring him to the gp and confirm it is his teeth not a bug, can't hurt to be sure, especially with a high temp

if it is teething i'd be careful about giving calpol or neurofen too often, keep them for night time so they actually help him sleep. homeopathic camomille (sp?) might help calm him down, either nelsons teetha or you can get it in drops you put in water, handy if he's drinking tonnes. my dd also appreciates cold things, head being wiped with cold cloth, v.cold drinks, teething ring from fridge etc.

chances are he's getting a load of teeth in one go, my dd got 6 the first time she teethed properly at 10 months and is currently getting somewhere between 8 and 14(she won't let me poke around properly to find out)

melissasmummy · 23/04/2006 14:25

just as an aside, please cut out the vimto, weak or not. Once his teeth come thru youdon't want them spoiling.

jalopy · 23/04/2006 14:25

Temperature (38.5) seems a bit high for teething. Get him checked by G.P. Hope he gets better soon.

morningpaper · 23/04/2006 15:20

Vimto is not suitable for babies, you need to try and cut it out

Try herbal teas or water

Have you any reason to suspect he is dehydrated?

Hi all thanks for the advice. I have phoned nhs 24 just to check what to do. they advised to strip him off and give him a tepid bath. I have also to give him penty of cool drinks and nurofen plus calpol every 4 hours. i have also put some bonjela on and given him his teething ring, although he isnt overly fussed about it. he seems to be a wee bit better since the bath and meds. been giving him water as well. what a nightmare, i hope it passes soon...

LynseyM, I know Boots sell smg my DD thought was brilliant for her teething. They´re called Bickiepegs and are like VERY hard wooden sticks (made of wheat). This really seemed to relief the pain when a teething ring was useless. They´re sold in tiny boxes so make sure you don´t overlook them on the shelf!

Try ashton and parsons they are herbal and my son got alot of relief from that.
