How uncomfortable is it to have a mirena coil taken out?

I'm having my coil taken out at the GP's surgery next monday, and am wondering whether it will be painful or not, and whether I will be OK to drive home - I am assuming I will be - am I right?

lI'd love to know the answer too, mine is up for renewal removal this year and I wondered if it had taken root after 5 years. I didn't have any pain when it was put in, apart from mild period pain so hopefully it'll be the same on the way out. Confused

I've heard it is much less painful to remove than it is to get it put in. I drove after getting mine put in.

I never felt it being taken out. I had a smear at the same time and felt that slightly more (though not painful)

I had mine taken out and a new one put in at the same time. I'm not too good at pain, so took an ibuprofen about half an hour before hand & was fine. Some periody cramps a couple of hours later, but nothing too sharp.

Don't forget - no unprotected sex for one week before having it removed.

I had mine swapped (due again now) and the removal was fine, no worse than a smear, but reinsertion more tricky. Felt ok afterwards though iirc.

if you are getting a old mirena out and a new mirena inserted you dont need to use extra protection. If you are getting it removed to use a different method of contraception then you would need to use other precautions starting from a week before removal.

It's not too bad, just remember to take your painkiller beforehand. Going in is a sharp intake of breath moment but once it's done, it's done.

Rache1S · 23/01/2013 14:38

Getting it removed is barely noticeable compared to the agony of getting one put in. It took a fraction of a second and didn't hurt at all Smile

pianotunatothestars · 23/01/2013 14:40

I drove home afterwards.

Pantah630 · 23/01/2013 15:00

I would still drive/ride but then I rode home after a colposcopy and cauterisation of the cervix - am hard me Grin - cuddled up to a hot water bottle for hours afterwards but my own fault as bike very heavy to get off stand [idiot emoticon]

Am pleased it'll be a, hopefully, pain free swap over.

Thank you all - I will remember to take some painkillers before I go to the surgery.

I knew I could trust the wisdom of mumsnet to reassure me.
