Hi Everyone,

I am a little worried at the moment. I just had my 3 mo old baby and for the last 4 months I had several kidney stone episodes. All were past on their own except for the last one which I had when I went in to have my baby. I thought I was dieing when I went to the hospital that night. While in there I went through so much torture. I had a serious infection in my bladder and kidnet so I had to have it drained and a stent put in. Several weeks later I had to have lasor surgery to blast the stone. I have had so much agony over these stones and said I dont think I could go through the whole thing all over again. Well I woke up this morning with the same mild pain I started off with in the past only in my left side this time. I am petrified its another srtone forming. Has anyone ever had a stone and then had another one again. Its only been 3 months since the last problem. My whole surgery ordeal was almost $9000,00. Thank god our ins is paying for most but I dont know if I will be as lucky next time.

Fourangels, I hope Susanmt sees this thread. She is a fellow-sufferer and might have some ideas to exchange with you. I'm so sorry. From what you have both said this condition sounds absolutely agonising.
I guess you used to be threeangels? Congratulations on the birth of your latest little one

I had what they thought was a kidney stone and it is too big to blast. I am awaiting surgery to remove the whole kidney as the surgeon said the kidney would be damaged by removing whatever it is, he says I only need one, as long as he takes out the right one!

You have my sympathy, I know what the pain is like.

Hi fourangels - I sympathise!!!!!! I have got to go and feed small baby, do breakfast etc at the minute, but will write a longer reply later. So if you have any more specific questions please post them and I'll 'speak' to you later! But yes, stones can recur. If you thonk it i one, take some anti inflammatory painkillers (eg Voltarol, Ibuprofen) and then get in touch with your doc. Hope its not one - I had stone pain almost every day of my last pregnancy, but it is calming down now (after 7 weeks and removal of my stent).

\finally got a chance to get back to you on this one. My kidney stones, like one in 2000 preganceies, were caused by pregancy. Basically, 1 in 2000 women get them, as everyone has more calcium in their blood during pregnancy, and most women cope OK with it, but 1 in 200 don'r, especially if they are prone to urine infections during pregnancy. I dont know if my story willl make you feel better or worse, as I had a hellish time with the stones and am only now starting to feel ant better.
I had my first kidney stone in Sept 2001, when I was 4 months pg with ds (mt secons child). I spent 5 days in hospital but the stone passed itself. I had another stone in dec 2001, then on 1 Jan 2002 I started passing a stone a day, and this went on until ds was born in Feb. It took 10 months for the stones to disappear completely, though it got less and less through the year. When I saw the consultant about it (in Nov 2001) and asked about it , he said it was related to pregnanncy and I should consider my family complete and not go through it again. I was happy with this decision, only ever having planned to have 2 children (had dd born feb 2000 and ds born feb 2002) but my mirena coil fell out and I got pregnant again, and dd2 was born 7 weeks ago. During the pregnancy, from about 8 weeks or so I passed stomes almost every day, and by then end of the pregnanncy has a serious pethedine habit. At 32 weeks I had a stent put in which made a big difference but it got chronically indected and was taken out on Thursay of this week as I was in loads of pain again. Once the stent was out I have a few stones left to pass but I know it will be limited and eventually stop.

If your stones were related to pregnanncy then the likelihood id that that is what is causing it and all you have to do is pass the stones that you made while you were pregnant. It is agony, but once they are out it is much better. Stones can be caused by infection, but stones also cause infection, so if there are any in your kidney you can end up in a cycle of stone=infection=stone etc, so sore as it is, it is best to get them out.

Some people are prone to stones and will always be at risk. The most important things you can do are stop infections and drink loads. It sounds like a lot but I drink 10 pints of water a day, to keep my kidneys flushed out and working well. I also watch out very carefully for any sign of infection (passing blood, burning when I pee, running a temperature etc) and take antibiotics right away. I am also still on a nightly low dose of antibiotics to prevent infection.

If you have already had your baby, then the best thing you can do AS SOON AS YOU FEEL ANY PAIN is to take anti-inflammatory painkillers such as ibuprofen or voltarol, though you may also need opiates, like pethedine. When you are preg, you cant take the anti-inflammotiries, which is why I ended up on so much pethedine. At the moment I am on a combination of anti inflammatories and pethedine.
Kidney stones are agony, so dont worry about not coping with the pain, I dont think anyone can. I have felt suicidal about the pain, thinking I would rather be dead than go through it again. It is worse than childbirth, cos at least then you get gaps between conrtractions and something worth it at the end!
Some people are prone to stones and I am about to start a whole load of investigatipons to discover if it is something I am always going t be prone to, or something that will stop now I have had my last child (dh has had vasectomy in Nov as my consultant said I was at risk of losing my whole kidney like Alibubbles if I had another pregnancy).
Dunno if any of this helps, it did help me when I ralked to tother people who had suffered it as no one else understands the pain. \\stones can be recurrant and some proplr suffer them all their lives. \the best thing you can do is drink loads of water and avoif infections if you can. Please ask if you want to know any more. I am only up at 1.15 am as I have a stone passing tonight and even with pethedine cant sleep.

Hope you get better sooon. Its bad enough dealing with it when pregnant than dealing with it with a baby - as I know only too well!. Look after yourself, and I'm always here, or contact me off list if you like.
