Not sure there's a way to do it without hurting him, unfortunately. When I did my first aid stuff many moons ago they used to recommend using a clean scrubbing brush or nail brush - I know from experience that it works, but it does hurt.

charliecat · 22/04/2006 15:22

bugger that...scrubbing brush.arghhhhhhhhhhh
Bath good idea poor sod :(

Aero · 22/04/2006 15:24

Eek WWB - it's not that big, but full of miniscule bits of gravel. Have put him in the bath and am going to let it soften and then gently let him 'scrub' out the gravel with a wash puff thingy. Have put a little dettol in the water.

He was doing heroics on his scooter!

zippitippitoes · 22/04/2006 15:31

hope he's ok

and you're the only other person outside my immediate family whom I've ever heard puts dettol in the bath Grin

chapsmum · 22/04/2006 16:14

do you have any chloramphenicol eye ointment???

chapsmum · 22/04/2006 16:18

If you do apply it regulalry and clean what you can in the bath which I'm sure you are.
this is a topical antibiotic which is great for drawing dirt. ou could see perhaps if you could get a script from docs on call or even buy OTC from a chemist.
Additionally check he is up to date with tetanus...

If the bath does'nt fetch it all out, you could try flushing it out, maybe with the shower.

Wembley · 22/04/2006 16:42

If you turned up at A&E (and I realise that maybe that might be a bit over the top in this case) they would do exactly as WWB suggested as sore as it sounds. I remember having to do this to a motorcyclist and yes it did hurt (him not me) but it worked! A warm soak in the bath should do it not so sure about using Antibiotics though!!

Yorkiegirl · 22/04/2006 16:43

chapsmum knows her stuff. If you can't get it out in the bath do what she said.

chapsmum · 22/04/2006 16:45

Of course I am giving my advice in a purely mother like capacityWink
but chloramphenicol eye ointment is an accepted way to treat gravel burns (with small bits remaining) in them. Providing that you have irriagted what you can with bath and shower, what a fab idea waterfalls. (power shower could chaf a bit!!!)

chapsmum · 22/04/2006 16:45

hi YG

Yorkiegirl · 22/04/2006 16:46

Grin chapsmum

Wembley · 22/04/2006 16:47

Well I never knew that Chapsmum - I will file that for use later, my day will come :) Sorry to hijack the conversation a little but where does this advice come from? Blush I'll shut up then

expatinscotland · 22/04/2006 16:50

cheers, chapsmum. am saving this!

Wembley · 22/04/2006 16:54

Blimey just trying to help with this first aid and my 3 year old has just put her tooth through her tongue!!!

chapsmum · 22/04/2006 17:10

there has been some studys done and published in the BMJ, they are pretty old. I know this as I am a hardened moutian biker with some a and e experience extensive history of gravel in my knees

chapsmum · 22/04/2006 17:12

poor sausage, hope she ok wembley!!

Spagblog · 22/04/2006 17:22

zippitippitoes - My parents used to often run us a bath with Dettol in. They used to have a huge tin container of it!

Wembley · 22/04/2006 17:41

she's ok now, eating an ice lolly to numb the pain!

Aero · 22/04/2006 18:51

Ooooh wembley - poor wee thing.

Never used dettol in the bath before - just the only thing I could think of which was antiseptic.

Tried to flush it out with a syringe which wasn't realy cutting it, which is why I tried the bath. Think we've got it clean. Hope so anyway. Have dressed it and will change the dressing before bed and have another look then as it was coming through a bit.

We've had visitors this afternoon which is why I've only got back to this now.

I've got some antibiotic cream in the house if it becomes infected, but fingers x'd it won't come to that. Think they'd not be impressed if I took him to A&E with a graze, though it's rather deep. Will have it looked at if it looks like it needs professional attention though.

OP posts:
chapsmum · 22/04/2006 19:11

aero, you dont have to wait for it to become infected, chloramphenicolis fab for drawing the crap out of wounds cleaning them up and preventing infection.

Polgara2 · 22/04/2006 19:16

Well we use dettol in the bath as well if necessary! Also I use Zambouk ointment when anything needs drawing out like this or splinters, works a treat and is antiseptic too.

TwoToTango · 22/04/2006 19:22

I will be saving this thread for future info.
chapsmum and Polgara2 can you get chloramphenicolis and Zambouk over the counter at chemists?
