sore front bottom (dd not me)

dd complains of a sore front bottom quite regularly when returning from nursery. (no problems with me at the weekend or with childminder). when i look at the area, it is very red around the labia and just on the outside of her bottom, and it looks like it is sore. i have spoken to the nursery about making sure she wipes properly when she goes to the loo there and I've sent in kandoo wipes with her, and drummed it into her that she needs to use them.
tonight, in the bath, she was obviously very desperate to go to the toilet but absolutely refused on the basis of having a sore bottom. when i asked her whether she had wiped her bottom carefully at nursery she said that she hadn't been. which, if true (she does fib outrageously), means that she's only been for a wee once since she woke up this morning. she's now asleep.
don't know what to do next and this has been going on for quite a while now. it looks as though it's just urine that hasn't been wiped away properly but does anyone have any experience of anything similar which might shed more light on this problem?

I remember this happening when my DD was about 2 or 3. I used to put a tiny bit of sudacrem on the sore bits at night and that really helped heal. Perhaps a thin layer of vaseline on her bits before nursery might protect her. Does she go on ride-one toys at nursery - wondering if they are chafing? Also DD used to get sweaty in tights and now won't wear them because she used to get sore.

ride-on toys!!

waterfalls · 21/04/2006 19:55

Could you put some barrier cream on before you take her to nursery.
Do she wipe properly at home, or does she need help.

chapsmum · 21/04/2006 19:58

TBH I would stop using the Kandoo wipes they are quite highly perfumed and can cause sensitivity.
As for her being sore when she wees, there are a few things you will want to rule out;
1 if she has a UTI
2 if she has thrush.
You can ease the discomfort by encouraging her to pee in the bath or by pouring water as she pees.
Speak to the nursery again, is she using a rocking horse or anything like that which could be aggrivating it.
Failing that it you could perhaps show her why she should wipe through play, eg on one of her dolls. Poor dooly has a sore bootom because she didnt wipe properly etc.

I know this might be an inappropriate and shocking remark but, are you sure nothing untoward is happening at the nursery, as this is the only place she comes home sore from?

Not trying to worry you of offend, so please no-one shoot me.

not wiping properly - dd was the same when started nursery until I insisted she was helped to wipe.

lalaa · 21/04/2006 20:43

it's not worms - she had those and we did the de-worming thing quite recently.
i don't think it's a UTI because it isn't persistant - it's only when she comes back from nursery. I have a history of recurrent UTIs and they don't just go away and come back again a week or two later. IME, they just get worse if you don't treat them.
I don't think it's thrush because there are no obvious normal symptoms of that (discharge, etc).
She does like to 'stroke' her bottom and has to be encouraged to do this only in private quite often (!). I suppose that it is possible that she's making an irritation worse by her 'stroking'.
She had quite bad eczema as a baby and I wonder whether her skin is generally quite sensitive. Vaseline is a great idea, and I've got some sudacreme already which works well. Just want to stop it happening in the first place.
I really don't think anything untoward is happening at nursery, apart from a lack of supervision in the toilet - we help her wipe at home, and I know my childminder does too - and I think that this is the key. Good idea about using dolly to demonstrate wiping properly. Will put into action this weekend.
Thanks all - sound advice again....

It might sounds weird but dip a roiboos tea bag in warm water then rub it on the sore... Best antiseptic ... or put a roiboos tea bag in a warm bath... maybe it won't help or maybe it will but it should dry the sore skin!!!! It does work for our DD when teething give her the worst napy rash (skin bleeding)

lalaa, does she wear tights? They can often cause soreness if worn all day.

HappyMumof2 · 21/04/2006 21:15

sorry but I have to agree with waterfalls. This would worry me.
dd doesn't always wipe properly after a wee (she is 2.5) but has never been sore.

Have you addressed this with the staff?

Aero · 21/04/2006 21:25

Think it's most likely to be caused by not wiping properly. My dd is now 5.5 and has been under investigation for similar problems. All tests are clear which I suspected anyway, but I had been very worried. I believe that her skin is in contact with the urine longer than it should be as she doesn't always wipe carefully. I would be very surprised if it were something untoward going on at nursery. Does she have to sort herself out there - how old is she? They asked me these sort of questions re dd too and I was very worried and stressed about it (more so than I was about her soreness tbh,m but I knew she was safe as she's mostly with me or at school), but things are improving now and she is taking more care to make sure she is properly dry.
I recommend metanium cream to clear it up quickly. HTH
