Is there anyone remotely medical or who knows anything like this around??

She went in 2/3 days ago to have her gall bladder removed by keyhole surgery. Everyone else who was in for it went home the same day. The nurses told my Mum she had been feeling very sorry for herself, refusing to co-operate or eat and she was shouting out in pain. They scanned her and discovered she had some internal bleeding so took her back to theatre last night. My Mum has just said she is now in intensive care on a verntilator - they tried to take her off it but she couldn'\t breathe so she's back on it and sedated. :(

I'm just wondering what could have gone that wrong??

Thank you all for your kind messages. It's so hard to believe she's gone even though we knew it was coming. At least now she's finally at peace and with my Grandad - the only person she has wanted to be with for the last 8 years.

Abrief update is that the hospital (or rather the consultant) have basically admitted that they were to blame. They made a mistake during one of the operations and they don;t know what, but it had an effect on her liver. A post mortem came back inconclusive so it now has to go to an inquest. :( Angry Does anyone have any experience of what happens next? ........ Maybe I need to start a new thread under 'legal' to see if anyone has been through similar.......

Oh ZC, I'm so sorry to hear that your Nan died. Lots of sympathy to you and your family.

Gingerbear · 30/05/2006 11:42

Oh Zephrcat Sad What an awful thing to have to cope with now, on top of losing your nan. I have no advice, but bumping in the hope that others may have some for you.

Zephryr Sad Sorry about your nan.

As far as the inquest goes, it can be a while before it happens. The coroner should be able to give you an idea of how long. Once they've definitely finished any post-mortems though you'll be able to have your Nan back and hold the funeral. They give you an interim death certificate so that you can start to tidy up and financial stuff but her death won't be registered until after the inquest. The coroner will decide whether her death was due to natural causes or to negligence although if the PM was inconclusive you may not get a definite answer. I'm sorry.

Thank you.

We are having the funeral on Thursday, what they did after the post mortem was to take a sample of her liver to test, and mum had to sign a form to say that she either wanted to wait for the sample back before holding the funeral or give them permission to destroy it/use it for medical science etc but Mum wanted to let the funeral go ahead as soon as we could.

The mad thing is the consultant told my Mum on the WEdnesday that they had done something wrong and they were to blame and gave my Nan hours to live. Turns out that a friend of my uncle very nearly died 10 years ago after the same operation and the same 'comlications' ........ by the same consultant! Angry He sued the hospital and won.

One thing that dp said is that as it is going to an inquest maybe we should have held out for an independant post mortem, but I don't know how it works and whether that would make any difference. Apparently the coroner said the inquest could take upto about 3 months.

Sad zephyr.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 30/05/2006 12:22

I only have experience of this sort of thing from the Death Registration side but the coroner obviously thinks that something wasn't quite right otherwise he would have entered a cause of death. I think that this way he probably gets to see your nan's notes and also is able to ask questions of her doctors.

Whatever the outcome of the inquest you still have grounds to take it further (if that's what you want to do), after all they have already admitted to making some sort of error.

i am so sorry to hear about your loss, i am just wondering what hospital this happened at as i am going in for this surgery in the next couple of weeks and it has frightened me so much. X

zephyrcat · 30/05/2006 12:54

thanks - I think my Mum may well consider taking it further this time as the same sort of thing happened with my Grandad at the same hospital (although not surgery)

Jackieglyn I'm sure you will be fine - loads of people were in and out on the same day as my Nan with the same operation - I don't think the risk is any greater than any other operation xx The hospital my Nan was in is in Reading
