How long do you ignore a tummy ache?

Hiya
this is probably a really dim thing to ask but I think I just want someone to tell me what to do!!
My dd (10yo) suddenly had very painful tummy (left side)last Thursday, we were at Thorpe Park. She was in so much pain that she was bent double and couldn't walk. Gave pain killers, 10 mins later she vomitted, not much tbh, just the water she had drunk. She spent the rest of the morning cuddled in on my lap shivering. It improved but was coming on and off all day. At home gave hot water bottle, and said "we'll see how it is in the morning", like you do. Anyway (sorry to ramble) she has said that it now hurts more central and to the right, and not all the time. She is fine to go to school and has been all week, but insists that it is still painful on and off. I hate going to the GP because they always make me feel totally stupid, and have had run ins with mine in the past. Should I take her just to be sure she is ok or just see how it goes. Somebody kick me up the bum and give me some advice PLEASE!! thank you very much

I would deffo go to GP. If you have probs with your GP you can ask to see another I think.

blueteddy · 21/04/2006 08:23

Definitely go to your gp. It is better to be safe than sorry.

NannyL · 21/04/2006 08:25

i agree go and see the GP

(may be its time to start thinking about changing GPs as well if they make you feel that you cant take your child who is doubled up in pain to see them?)

sounds like could be start of appendicitis - I had this as a child and symptoms were quite similar but did get worse quite quickly - would def. get her checked out, expecially if she's unusually pale. Could just be bad stomach bug but only a doctor can tell for sure.

Tortington · 21/04/2006 08:52

oh kayetee never mind feeling silly , if she has a burst appedicitis it could get very serious very quickly.

go to casualty

thanks all of you, I have phoned the Gp's surgery now, and the triage nurse is going to call me back to discuss it. The reason I haven't done anything is she seems ok for most of the time and then she suddenly gets a pain and then it goes again and its been like this all week. have decided my GP is a bully!!lol. Last year the practice nurse gave dd viscopaste (sp?_ wraps for her eczema on her hand, the next day her hands blistered and were going purple!! I took her to GP and said "I think she's allergic to this" she disagreed and said she thought impetigo (both dds have had this in the past and this looked nothing like it). I said I was sure it must be an allergic reaction as she had blistered during the night while using the wraps, she went and got a colleague who totally ignored me and said to her "you are quite correct this is not an allergic reaction it is impetigo" and left the room!. I took dd1 to gps as she has had warts on her hand for 5 years and was told "mothers are paranoid, warts will go away in their own good time", I now have a 12yo who hides her hands, not good at secondary school!. I could go on and on with little anecdotes about my darling GP, but just one last one (sorry) my weight went up and up after dd1 was born. I felt really ill and tired all the time, she said I was fat because of what i put in my mouth, nothing else!! A locum tested my thyroid function and hey guess what?!! need I say more?
Thanks again, i will let you know how my dd gets on.

Katetee, the appendix is on the right side but can give referred pain to the left, sounds like she could be in for the dreaded d and v bug thats going around
Hope the nurse gives you some good chat and isn't too bossy!

katetee · 21/04/2006 10:11

Hi
oohh hope its not d&v, that makes me v. too!!lol
Nurse just called and said it could be 101 things! poss grumbling appendix, poss bug, poss her periods getting ready to start! anyway she said to bring her in at 10.55 to see one of the Gps so I will see how that goes. Thanks for all of your help.

how are things Katetee???

katetee · 21/04/2006 17:17

Hi
thanks for asking. Saw Gp, he felt her tummy to check appendix, and ruled that out. He said she was quite "gurgly" in there. He thinks it is probably colic, and possibly there was a virus involved! Also said she is very skinny so let her eat ANYTHING, but she needs to increase her fluid intake. the trouble I have alays had with that (She was 10 weeks prem btw) is that if she drinks she doesn't feel the need to eat and vice versa. Always been prone to constipation and used to projectile vomit after almost every feed. So I am going to have to work extra hard on her fluids and hope she will eat too! Any advice would really be appreciated

hmm..yes definitly best to have it checked out.
i had 'grumbling appendix' (had to laugh when the doctor diagnosed it as that..better thanthe usual long latin name you can't say...lol)
and it caused pain on both sides intermittently. i had to have it removed as a prcautionary measure.

ovarian cyst is also a possibilty. i had this when i was 11 and it had burst which was reallysuddenand painful.

hope she gets well soon whatever it is! Smile
