dd woke up this morning with conjunctivitis, in both eyes, eyelids glued together, i bathed them, then rang gp and asked for chrloramphenicol, receptionist said, sorry gp is too busy today, theres only one doctor on and hes having to cover another surgery, so i said, ok, can she have an appt, receptionist says yes, friday 28th april!!!!!

Can the surgery not telephone the prescription through to a chemist for you?

Our surgery will do that in an emergency and follow it up with the paperwork afterwards.

LeahE · 20/04/2006 15:27

If it's any consolation, if it's started in both eyes at once there's a good chance it's the viral sort rather than the bacterial in which case the eyedrops won't do anything to make it better, they just stop the bacterial sort setting in as well (since eyes that are all gunked up are the ideal environment for bacteria). So while you do want to get the drops, if it is viral then a little delay (not until 28 April though that's just taking the p*ss) shouldn't hurt your dd.

they will usually quite happily do a prescription then send it over to the chemist, but they wont phone then through no.

Optrex sell an Infected Eye Drop now specially for conjuctivitus in any pharmacy. Would that not help!

Mog · 20/04/2006 16:09

Pharmacies can now give antibiotic eyedrops without a prescription - we did it a couple of weeks ago when my sister was visiting with my neice. Phone your local pharmacies and see if they do it.

Mog · 20/04/2006 16:10

And you can use them for under 2's our pharmacist said, despite what it says on the box.

spacecadet · 20/04/2006 16:18

i was told by the pharmacy that the drops over the counter arent licensed for use in under 2's.

This is the exact reason I made a complaint to my doctor last week. The stroppy receptionist who begrudgingly give me an appointment 3 weeks ago for my ill baby. I have had it up to here with receptionists who are wannabe doctors!! who the blazes do they think they are?? My ds had conjunctivitis last week, he woke from his daytime nap with his 2 eyes glued shut so I called the clinic and asked for drops (he is 15months) the receptionist claimed it was not the correct time to be calling for a minor illness prescription!! I told her shove her prescription up her jacksie and to have our files ready when I went round as I had enough and I was leaving! Am now registered with another practice Blush

spacecadet · 20/04/2006 16:30

blimey fff-remind me not to get on the wrong side of you!!!!
seriously though, im lucky in that im moving in a couple of weeks, so i will register with a new practice, thank god is all i can say, im glad to be leaving them

unfortunately people round here are struck with this gp surgery as the next nearest one is 7 miles away and thats out of this gp catchment area.

Boil water, (about 9floz) add 2/3tsp salt and let cool. Bath eyes with cooled solution with cotton wool balls remembering to use each ball just one wipe and wipe from inside to outside as per advised by my local pharmacist.

Clears it up in no time and less hassle than trying to get drops in.

spacecadet · 20/04/2006 16:33

thanks pfer, was going to give that a go later when she has her bath.

How is she today SC?

spacecadet · 21/04/2006 10:43

her eyes are actually not as bad today-bathed them last night and again this morning, phoned gp, still no prescriptionAngry, so told them to forget it, also told them i would be de-registering soon as was moving.

1 pint boiled water, 1 teaspoon bicarb soda as an eyebath works well too.

Is there not an emergency doctor?? Madness.

spacecadet · 21/04/2006 10:49

soupdragon-ive been bathing them, no emergency doc out of hours, you have to go to a hospital miles away, then you have to find a pharmacy(this is what happens when you live in the middle of nowhere), thank god im moving to civilisation.
