MMR - how effective is it?

Hi
I just came across an old thread that talked about children still getting measles after they had MMR.

Well I can remember having my preschool jabs -I cried. Then I can remember having some at school and the nurse tutting at me because I spilt the sugar on the spoon with the polio dollop. My mum insists I had all jabs needed at the time (60's/70's).

I had measles when I was a toddler. I had polio when I was 9. I had rubella when I was 13. Finally I had mumps when I was 15.

So am I unique or have other people had the whole lot despite being vaccinated?

You didn't have the MMR. The programme started in the UK in 1988. HTH.

They didn't vaccinate against those diseases in 1960's. I too have had German Measles at 6 mths, measles as a toddler and mumps aged 6.

My DD (18) has had MMR jab and has not had any of those diseases. My DS (16) has not had the injection and he hasn't had any of them either. Read into that what you will OP.

You were extremely unlucky to contract polio. The vaccine has almost eradicated it in the UK. I was born in 1958 and when I was a child it wasn't unusual to see people walking in calipers (leg braces) as a result of them having had polio. I had measles as a child and it affected my eyes. I have very poor eyesight and have to wear glasses with a very strong prescription.

I was born in 1966.

I had the measles jab.

As a child I had mumps (no vacine). As a teenger I was given the rubella jab at school. I woul dhave been about 14.

I have not had MMR, and nor have you.

The sugar lump polio vaccine was introduced in 1962 and you have, as bunbaker said been very unlucky to contract it.

Thanks for replies- that explains it.

FYI - I was thought to have caught polio from my nephew who had just been vacinated = I believe there is some risk of live polio being in the baby's dirty nappys? I had it mildly and was only affected for 2 months in which I couldn't use my legs/hips but gradually improved and got back to normal.

Poor you Maggi! Sounds like you were really unlucky. Yes, the old polio vaccine (the one given on a sugar lump) was a live vaccine & it was possible (but v rare) to get polio from nappies. It is now given as a combined injection & is no longer live so there is no longer a risk.

Has a post gone missing?

The polio vaccine was still a live one when DD was a baby 12 years ago, and we were warned about being careful with dirty nappies.

Oops, I think I may be wrong (sorry!) may just be that it being oral was the problem
