And if so would you have many symptoms?
Both my TSH and T4 came back normal but I noticed that my thyroid antibodies weren't tested is that normal?

Thyroid antibodies would cause your thyroid to not work normally. If your thyroid bloods are normal, all is ok.

Yep there are 2 major types of Thyroid antibody - ones which mimic the action of TSH and cause your Thyroid to go into crazy overproduction of Thyroid hormones (i.e. T4) and give you Hyperthyroidism (this is known as Graves Disease), and then ones which directly attack and destroy the Thyroid gland. These lead to Hypothyroidism and you would see a very high TSH (as the Pituitary gland is telling the Thyroid to get its act together and make some more T4!) with a low T4 as the cells that usually synthesise it are destroyed.

So, you see that you can identify whether or not any functional antibodies are presents purely by looking at what the consequences of those antibodies in terms of TSH and T4 - TSH and T4 being normal indicates that you don't have to worry about any antibodies. Saves you giving even more blood to them unnecessarily and (although this is not the driving decision), saves the NHS money, whilst giving you exactly the information you need. Wins all round :)
