My ds was diagnosed with this at birth. At an appointment when he was 6 weeks old we were told that he would be put on the waiting list for an op and would be done before his 2nd birthday and if we hadn't heard anything by 18 months to ring and see and they would move him up the list.

Rang when he was 18months and they said there were children waiting that should have been done last spring. rang this morning he is now 2.1 yr and they couldn't tell me when he would be done and that they had five year olds on the list still waiting since birth.

What am I supposed to do the whole idea of doing before age of two was that they wouldn't remember it and that they need to be catheterised for a few days. How do I find out what other hospitals will do the op.

Get an appointment privately with a specialist, and see if he can get you on to his NHS list.

You're absolutely right to get it out of the way as young as possible, so that your ds is as unaware as possible.

longwaytogo · 19/04/2006 11:18

he is on nhs list but i don't think the op is going to happen any time soon

I'm fairly sure that the consultant would be able to bring him up the list, if he considered it appropriate.

You just need to talk to him, and get him to understand how you're feelilng, and what your concerns are. Unfortunately, the only way you are likely to be able to do this is through paying for an appointment.

Shouldn't be necessary, I know!

longwaytogo · 19/04/2006 11:37

Can't afford to pay for appointment and i'm sure every other parent is in the same position really. The op needs doing asap but consultant has been on mat leave so tough.

wouldn't mind but this is Alder Hey for goodness sake so they only dealing with children not trying to fit it in amongst all the adults are they.

My ds has hypospadias. He was seen by a specialist at about 3 months and is also on the waiting list at Southhampton. We were told we would receive a date for his op in early June so still a few weeks to wait. I'm dreading it. My eldest DS is due surgery to correct his retractile testicles in July so the summer hols are gonna be fun. What is it with these boys and their weird goolies?!!

longwaytogo · 19/04/2006 12:42

so how old will he be in june tallmummy?

Sorry LWTG finally got 5 mins to look at MN. DS will be 1 at end of june. We were only going to get a confirmation of a date for the op then. They said best age is between a year and 18 ms

2 of my sons have this longwaytogo. Because we have moved many times since having children, our eldest son wasn't operated on until he was 5 and hopefully has not suffered as a result. The surgeon did say he would usually do them when the child is just out of nappies thus minimizing risk of infection post operatively.

We moved again last year and were referred by our surgeon to a new surgeon. I thought he would take the same approach, but he does not agree with the way ds1's repair was done and won't do ds3 the same way, much to mine and dh's annoyance. Also, he won't do ds3 until he is about 4, which is OK by us. All in all though, I think we will go for a second opinion elsewhere. Anyway, the point I am making is that different surgeons have different methods and timing and if you look around, you might find someone who will take your ds on.

DumbledoresGirl · 19/04/2006 21:14

Get your GP to refer you to someone else or ask your hospital directly for a referral elsewhere.

longwaytogo · 21/04/2006 09:06

Think i'm going to have a chat to HV and see if they can do the leg work for me. I know that one of our hospitals doesn't do it thats why they refered to Alder Hey, so might try and see if the other hospital does it. I wouldn't mind but they said best done before 2 so why do they say it if the waiting lists are too long.

Thing is I don't really want him to have it done but dh says he has to, and if he has got to have it done then i'd rather him not know too much about it, because if I have to start explaining things to him I think i'll back out.

My son is 8 months and has an appointment booked for another consultation when he's 14 months. I was certainly given the impression it would be done when he was about 2 and that it was usual to perform it at that age. I hope you have luck with your HV.
