Never had one before in my life.

A month ago felt lousy, pain on left side below ribs taht moved around and became lower back pain, Dr did pissy stick thing and said I had kidney infection. Fine after antibiotics

This weekend I had a lousy cold but was feeling much much worse than usually would with a cold. Really exhausted and not with it all. Falling asleep all over the place. Then realised I had this dull ache (not even an ache really, just aletered sensation) under left ribs. Went to the doc today and she said that it showed up as quite severe infection with blood and protein and other things in my wee.

I have had NO symptoms of a UTI eg no burning, increased frequency of urination etc.

REally weird, what could be causing it?

could be that the first lot of antibis didn't get it properly. I don't know much about UTIs (thankfully), but infections do sometimes come back with slightly diff symptoms.

hope you feel better soon.

Sorry I don't have a defintive answer, but I had this a few times on the trot, and think it is one of those things that once you have had it once, you are prone to it for a while every time your resistance gets a bit low. I haven't had it for about 5 years now, but make quite sure I get antibiotics immediately if I get a hint of cystistis symptoms. You could try cranberry juice or other remedies intended to keep your tubes 'clean'. Hope it is a short lived thing.

thanks senora and F&z

Yes maybe it didn't clear up
also I stopped drinking so much water as I thought it was better, I do drink too much caffeine.

Will try and do better

My prob is I have no real symptoms except this ache thing

I had this CD and ended up in hospital with a really unusual condition that was only discovered during investigative surgery - I won't frighten you with the details and anyway, it is virtually unheard of so extremely unlikely to be the cause of your infections.

Just wanted to offer my sympathies as I have been there and never want to be there again. Whatever you do, don't trivialise your condition or allow any doctor to either. I hope you get the answers you need soon.

oh god DDG that sounds vile!

I do take azathioprine (immunosuppressants) so I do pick up things like infections more easily than most but I have been on it for 12 years and never had a kidney infection yet

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I hate a spate of this when I was in my third year at university and off and on it lasted for around a year. I think it's true that when you get one you are then more prone for a while and really have to look after your health - vits, supplements, lots of sleep etc etc. Since having it I have always drunk a lot of water and limited coffee - I probably only have a couple of cups a week, sometimes none at all.

Are you generally a bit run down - it's probably the original infection returning. With me this happened four or five times but the bugs had always morphed slightly so the original anti-Bs didn't work.

puddle · 18/04/2006 18:40

'had a spate' - freudian slip tho.

CountessDracula · 18/04/2006 18:42

Yes I suppose it could be that it didn't clear up properly the first time but I felt fine in between.

I do try and look after my health, I get 7 or 8 hrs sleep and I am not stressed atm so I can't imagine what has started it all off

I was on azathioprine for years and was plagued with kidney infections in the last yr I was on it.Drink loads of water and don't have caffeine with the antibiotics if you can do without it I really sympathise it is a bit like a bad hangover having a bad infection

Noddy why were you on azathioprine? Did you get off succesfully then? I am trying, am down to 50 mg from 150, maybe I should just take the plunge.

Yes I have been feeling fluey chapsmum. Very like flu

I was switched to azathioprine when another immunosuppressant started to destroy my transplanted kidney It is much gentler.I don't think it is something you can stop if you are taking it for a long term inflammatory condition as it may worsen,50mg is not a huge dose tbh and it is more likely that the last antibiotics didn't do their stuff but keep going until you get it sorted as kidney infections are really nasty

georginarf · 18/04/2006 19:13

my guess is the antibiotics didn't clear it up properly and it came back - I had a spate of kidney infections at university, but they haven't really been back since.

poor you, very nasty
