over active thyroid

Following the birth of my dd I've been diagnosed with an over active thyroid which is apparently sometimes triggered by pregnancy. I'm feeling v tired and a bit anxious which are symptoms and therefore I'm keen to take medication but I'm demented as dd still eclusively bf at 5+ months and refusing bottle and my GP has advised once on medication its not advisable to bf. I'm upset as I wanted to continue to bf a bit longer and worried about the imminent transition for dd. Anyone any experience or advice to share?

That's a toughy levon. I have no personal experience of this, though my sister is waiting for dx of something possibly similar.
I suppose it depends on how tired and anxious you are feeling and whether you feel you've tried everything else (diet wise and in terms of natural remedies) to improve this.

It's really tough for you to have to give up breastfeeding before you're ready. BUT, if you have to, then I would congratulate you heartily on getting this far.

No much help I know, but good luck to you.

i had a friend with this and i think the medication worked very well. i don't think she was still breastfeading at that point however. i can see how you must be worried. hope it works out and someone with better advice comes along.

Hi, I had an overactive thyroid 12 years ago, and medication does work very well and will ease your simptoms within a matter of weeks. I would advise though that you begin to take your medication asap, as the longer you hold off taking medication, the worse your simptoms can become. Tiredness/anxiety are just two simptoms of hyperthyroidism, but the higher the levels are, the worse your simptoms will become, these can include hair loss (mine was dramatic), dramatic weight loss, increased appetite, severe fatigue, heart palpitations, and in some cases, early menopause, (although this can generally be reversed once on medication. Also, if you are planning to have more children, you will be advised not to ttc while taking the thyroid medication, so the sooner you start taking it, the sooner you could potentially ttc again if this is your intention. Sorry, I don't mean to try and scare you, but hyperthyroidism is considered to be a serious condition, and you really shouldn't hold off taking medication for it.

thanks for support/advice. Been to hospital and had more tests. I'm delighted as i've not been put on medication yet and can continue to bf (dd STILL not taking bottle). Doctors are hopeful the problem will sort itself and i'll be able to proceed without further problems. Fingers crossed.
