Seat covers in public toilets--a must for children?

My SIL was disgusted to see our DD (7) use the toilet without placing loo-roll on the seat. Am I a bad mother for having never taught her this 'trick'? I was under the impression that infection is not spread from toilet seats and that the most important part of public toilet hygiene is washing hands and avoiding touching the flushing mechanism, the tap, and the door handle once your hands are clean.

(If there are seat covers available then I encourage her to use them but I thought that the bacteria just went through the loo roll.)

I sit and dd1 sits.

ALWAYS wash our hands even though I hiss 'dont touch anything as we go in.

muma3 · 18/04/2006 15:34

oh yes def whisper " dont touch a thing " too Smile

No - not a bad mum - I always think people over-react about the 'dangers' of public toilets.

As long as your DD washes her hands after, there is no chance of catching anything.

If the seat is wet from the flush I wipe it over before DD / I sit on it, but that's a comfort thing, not a hygiene thing!!!!!!!

mumfor1standfinaltime · 18/04/2006 15:36

Have never seen seat covers in public loos anyway!
I usually hover! Surely washing hands is more important, and wont you be touching the loo seat with your hands when strategically placing the loo roll on the seat lol!

Carmenere · 18/04/2006 15:40

Can I just ask, has anyone ever heard of anybody catching something from a toilet seat? I mean I know bacteria are spread via unwashed hands but what exactly can your thighs contract from coming in contact with bacteria?

daisy1999 · 18/04/2006 15:42

I used to hover but was sick of weeing on my trousers (???). Always sit on the seat now Grin

Carmenere · 18/04/2006 15:43

Apparantly hovvering is bad for you as you are unlikely to empty your bladder completely.

Carmenere I have it on good authority that you can get pregnant from the toilet seat that a boy has weed on!

Greensleeves · 18/04/2006 15:56

three finger what?!?!?!?!?

expatinscotland · 18/04/2006 15:57

I put loo roll on the seat. Even now. But I'm one of those 'weirdies' who uses soap to wash her hands after using the loo and doesn't handle taps or door handles w/my bare hands after doing so.

Carmenere · 18/04/2006 15:57

What you can actually catch babies from toilet seatsShockGrin

chapsmum · 18/04/2006 15:58
