He has health insurance of course, but I have no idea what the policy usually is. He's been in bed the past couple of days with a cold, nothing too serious, but it seems to be turning into some kind of infection and I just got thinking, if it did turn out that he needed antibiotics what would happen? Obviously he's not registered at a GP here any more.

He is entitled as an EU citizen to treatment for any acute illness which starts while he's here. So he can be seen as a temporary resident by the local GP surgery and get medication on prescription using the NHS. Anything which requires him to go to hospital for secondary care will be where his insurance will kick in as he will not be entitled to free treatment.

As previous poster said.. He gets treated like any other paitent. Normally you get asked to go 10 mins earlier to fill in a form.

OK thanks. He's still a UK citizen but resident in Germany.

So am I but resident in Italy and when I have been in the Uk its been simple- both for me and the dds , when needed!

As a UK citizen, you are automatically entitiled to NHS when here.

digerd · 04/01/2013 20:47

Have a word with your GP about it.

scaevola · 04/01/2013 20:53

He needs an EHIC (issued in Germany as his normal place of residence) which entitles an EU resident to health care in any EU country on the same terms as residents of that country.

Being British is not a criteria for access to NHS; it is based on being ordinarily resident here. As he is not, he needs the EHIC (and/or insurance).

LIZS · 04/01/2013 20:53

His EHIC should cover this but UK citizens living abroad are not necessarily entitled to free NHS care (ie. non emergency and subsidiised prescriptions) if they have not lived here recently.

I was resident in Germany for 13 years. When I came back after DH died, I signed on at the nearest GP immediately with no problem.
Also while still resident in germany, I had dental treatment in UK, no form needed.

I don't think he has an EHIC - I'll get onto him about that when he gets back! I thought that was just a UK thing. He seems a bit better today anyway :)
