Help with insomnia?

I could really do with some help. I occasionally have bouts of insomnia lasting a couple of days here and there but this one is becoming crippling. I can't remember the last time I slept for more than an hour. I haven't felt this sleep deprived since DD was a baby. I just can't function (even typing this is hard). I can't think of anything particularly stressful that is keeping me up....I just tend to fall asleep quite quickly then wake up around an hour later and be wide awake...well sort of wide awake anyway....right now I feel like a zombie.

I have an appointment with the Dr this afternoon but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Plenty of tryptophan containing foods in the evening. Banana and porridge, poultry, brazil/walnuts can all help.

Thanks....I'm veggie and can't stand bananas but I love porridge. I'll try having some for dinner later and bung some nuts in there.

Look up sleep hygiene and follow the instructions to the letter. It does work but you have to stick with it. You need to train your brain and body to switch off when it's night , so actually telling them it's night seems to be the key.

White noise. I have a white noise app on my iPod which helps switch my brain off to sleep and if I wake in the night I stick the ear phone back in. It's the only thing that's worked for me in 15 years of insomnia.

You could try a course of low dose anti-depressants. I've started taking amtitryptiline (sp) in a low dose to try to relieve some long-term back pain which is nerve related. I read on the packaging that this same drug is sometimes used to relieve insomnia. I used to suffer with this quite a lot and since starting the AD's I'm sleeping much much better, only been on them about 3 weeks so far though.

Being a vegetarian it is feasible you are b12 deficient, which can have major impact on sleep. Sub-lingual spray gives best delivery of b12. Better You B12 Boost is excellent.
