had a letter through asking for our chouice of hospital for ophthalmology clinic. just phoned up, they said the longest she will wait is 13weeks! if an adult was struggling with their eyes they culd just go to opticians for eye test and glasses. because dd3 and dh are both being seen by hospital clinics they are left to struggle. dh is hillingdon hospital to collect his glasses, he has been waiting since his stroke in nov to get his eyes tested and glasses.

That's dreadful Misdee Sad. When my gran was in hospital five years ago and they reckoned she was virtually blind, they still wouldn't try and arrange for her to have an eye test, although it almost certainly was cataracts, which would have been easily remedied. When I was trying to speed up DS squint appointment, I said I would go to whichever clinic had the shortest wait, but that still meant a 3.5 month wait!

ItalianJob · 18/04/2006 08:18

Does your DD need glasses for a squint, or is it something else?

noddyholder · 18/04/2006 08:20

Misdee that is terrible What is wrong with her eyes and how did you know? She is really young I agree she should be seen quicker.I have had an abcess on my tooth for 9 weeks which has to be extracted in hospital because of my heart I was told I'd wait 5 days and now they have lost my x rays!Peter shouldn't have to wait that long following a stroke

misdee · 18/04/2006 08:21

she is severely long sighted. she was put forward for a special new camera eye test in jan, which revealed the problem. then she had to be referred to ophthalmology via the docs, which didnt get done till march. it was only done as i asked the doc to sign dd3 liscencing cert and a different doc spotted the referral needed. so he did that, and no we have had the letter asking for our choice of hospital.

dh is just off now to hillingdon to get his glasses.

How can you tell there is something wrong with a baby's eyes?Sorry just noseyBlush

misdee · 18/04/2006 08:25

it was a funny looking camera, it relected light back off the eyes, and all my girls are longsighted, but dd3 is severely long sighted.

now they need to do the drops and play with lenses to et her correct perscription.

with DS the HV thought she could pick up a squint at the 18 month check - DS finally got seen last month, 6 months later! turns out he doesn't have a squint, but is a bit longsighted, but their main concern is that he is astigmatic in both eyes, but one eye is a lot worse than the other, so they want to monitor that, as DS might develop a lazy eye. I am soo grateful that the HV cocked up about the squint, as I would never have picked up the astigmatism myself.

ItalianJob · 18/04/2006 08:29

when DS was seen by the opthalmologist he had drops and they played around with lenses (no camera!)

Thanks for the reminder!! Need to go to Specsavers for my eyetest. Time for new glasses I think!!

morningpaper · 18/04/2006 09:25

misdee I expect that is the maximum wait allowed by targets - you will probably be seen very shortly

misdee · 18/04/2006 09:28

spursmum your eye test was due last year.

I have very bad eyes so much so that i get free eye tests at27 which isnt good but now i dont have to pay out. anyway because mine are so bad my son got checked at about 6 months because i thought he had a squint and then again 6 months later. He doesnt have a sqiunt but gets checked every 6 months like me to spot any problems early.

Can you find an independent opticians and get a test done there?

monkey · 19/04/2006 06:01

We had to wait months! Ds referred at 8 week check. Finally got glasses when 8 months old Angry. Then all I got were comments about how cruel it was making him wear glasses, or on better days, if they were for decoration. wtf???? Angry.

Still, at least she's 3 so you should be able to avoid these mad comments. Bloody diabolical tho.
