Vomiting bug and flying

assumpta · 02/01/2013 14:32

Hi myself and dh are due to fly to Dublin tomorrow lunchtime with our 2dds, however we have both started to vomit within ours of each other since about midday. I was just vomiting, but now on the loo also and figure dh will be heading in the same direction shortly, probably closely followed by the kids. Can we fly with this? Do we go the doctors? Can we get a sick cert in order to get a refund, and if we can't go into the surgery how do we get one? We fly with aer lingus. Anyone with similar experiences? Thanks.

'hours' not 'ours'

No I don't think you should fly with a d&v bug. It is extremely selfish to other passengers who could have their holiday ruined. You don't know who else is flying - immune problems, pregnancy etc..
As for refund, have a look at who you booked with and the insurance you took out.

Yes of course get on the plane and spread it to every single other person on that plane. Great idea

If you have insurance a note from your dr will sort out your travel expense.

forevergreek · 02/01/2013 14:36

Definatley not. It's terrible for other passengers. After 2 hrs on a plane your germs will have circulated the entire plane.

Exactly as I thought, but didn't want to think that I was over reacting. I obviously wouldn't want to spread it around, and have just gone over everything we have eaten, and nothing dodgy has been consumed by us both. I guess I will ring the surgery re a sick note, I am sure they won't want to see us!

No, you cannot fly with this. It is clearly a bug. If I was on that flight and you gave me D&V, which is usually v contagious, I would be absolutely livid. Totally not fair on anyone.

What are the terms and conditions with Aer Lingus? You need to check, but I can't imagine they cover this - this is what travel insurance is for...

Do you have travel insurance that covers if you are sick?

Do not go to the surgery with D&V, you risk infecting lots of other people there. Many of whom are already ill!

Sips of water and wait it out.

Sorry you feel so ill.

UC - thanks that is exactly what I am now doing.

The dr should be able to make arrangements for anyone who has d&v but needs a sick note.

First things first, call your insurance company. They will guide you about the gp situation. Then phone the airline. What a nuisance for you all :(

ProudAS · 02/01/2013 22:17

Have you phoned gp? Might be able to better advise re fitness to fly than MNers and issue certificate either way.

We had this happen to dd2, when we were due to fly to Barcelona to go on a cruise. We called the airline and they said that they would allow dd2 on the plane, and therefore would not refund us Hmm. We then called the cruise company, who said that dd2 would need to be examined by the ships doctor before a decision would be made about if she could embark, but she would probably be confined to her cabin for four days

Dd was clearly too sick to travel (both ends going, unable to reach a toilet in time), so we decided to not travel, despite being far from certain that we would get any money back. We did need to take her to see the GP ASAP for him to fill in the insurance documents. You will need to explain this to the receptionist when you call in case you cannot get an appointment. I think insurance companies do like doctors to have seen the patient in person. I would call your insurance company to confirm this, because it's certainly not ideal to take an infectious person into a GP waiting room.

My GP was not sure if we would get refunded by the insurance company because noro is not the serious type of illness that is normally paid out for. However, he did say that if we was ship's doctor he would not have let dd board. Luckily the insurance company did pay - we had paid thousands for the holiday.

How did you get on!
