If one member of the family has norovirus, is it inevitable that the others will too?

What can we do to mitigate this and lessen the chances of it spreading to everyone?

No. DH had it but me and DS didn't. I effectively quarantined him in a room to sleep it off and changed our bed. Made sure he had no physical contact with me or DS and kept hands clean. Didn't sleep in the same bed until he was better. I was in first trimester and DS only 19 months so relieved we didn't get it! Although we may just have stronger immune systems!

DCs all got it but me and DH didn't. We rarely get ill though but DCs seem to do an ill relay there's always one of them ill and they pass it around between them Sad

happymschicken · 02/01/2013 12:41

My DD got it NYE, my son and DH got it last night so I'm just waiting for it to ravage me.

I'm too scared to eat anything tbh. I'm frantically handwashing but seeing how it's spread through us and our NYE houseguests I don't think I'll escape it.

Last night was absolutely bloody dreaful. Not one I wish to repeat again in a hurry.

No - not necessarily. My sister is a nurse and was looking after a patient who had it so she was assigned to him for the whole illness on the basis that she had already been exposed and neither she nor any member of the family got it. In terms of lessening the chances pf spreading it - here is the NHS advice www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Norovirus/Pages/Prevention.aspx

Fimgers crossed for you!

Thanks for the replies. I'm still not convinced its actually norovirus. He's got a temperature and had diahorrea (I can never spell that bloody word, sorry if its wrong) but he hasn't been sick yet. He does feel nauseous and wants to be sick but hasn't actually done so yet.

I got it-DD and DH escaped.I stayed in my bedroom, tons of bleach, stayed away from food, and hand sanitiser and separate bathrooms- it worked.Good luck.

We went away for a long-weekend with friends. DH caught norovirus on the Sunday night. Saw out of hours GP at local hospital and he said you could develop it 4 hours after being in contact with a contagious person. He said we were to observe very strict hand hygiene (no touching faces, mouths with hands). The rest of the family did not catch it (2 teen daughters and myself). I was obviously sharing a bed and thought I was doomed - but I survived!!. He was over the worst by Tuesday and we managed a long drive home with the help of immodium! Was very severe with both ends very busy at the same time!! (TMI!!).

Yes, some people have strong immune systems. But best to take every precaution.

ProudAS · 02/01/2013 22:10

Fingers crossed DH and I have never caught each other's d&v despite sharing a bed and bathroom. I reckon its down to a combination of not preparing food for the other and always putting the loo lid down before flushing.

headfairy · 02/01/2013 22:23

Well he's much better. No diarrhoea since this morning. Still not been sick but stomach cramps and nausea. I'm wondering if it was actually just a very mild dose, or maybe he's just as strong as an ox and can withstand the dreaded virus Grin He's even managed a slice of toast.

I had it when dd was 9 weeks old and she didn't get it then but I put it down to the fact that I was bfing and she was getting some antibodies from me.

A spray bottle with diluted bleach. Follow infected person round, spraying everything he touches. Doesn't do wonders for your relationship, but stops the virus in it's tracks!

ProudAS · 02/01/2013 22:41

Get him a pack of disinfectant wipes so he can clean up after himself.

Seems to do the trick where I work and lack of sick pay encourages people to come in when ill.

ProudAS · 02/01/2013 22:48

BTW get into the habit of always putting down the loo lid when flushing (even when well). I saw an interesting demonstration of how droplets can travel round bathroom and onto toothbrushes etc.

sipper · 02/01/2013 23:00

ProudAS Thanks for the loo seat tip. Ew!

ProudAS · 02/01/2013 23:04

I20+ years of not knowing that snippet didn't do me any harm but knowing what I know now the lid has to go down.

ProudAS · 02/01/2013 23:05

20 even

feetlkeblocksofice · 02/01/2013 23:06

I had NV a few years back but DH and DD didn't get it, mind you I did send them out a lot and had a stock of bleach in the bathroom (window open) and cloths and gloves, also banned them from upstairs unless necessary. DH slept on the sofa.

VerySmallSqueak · 02/01/2013 23:13

I have a rule that only one adult does the clearing up (unless you have more than one child ill and simply can't manage).
In this way normally the kids get it and possibly the adult clearer upper (that'll be me as they always want Mum!)
No adults with it do the cooking.
Everything a child has touched and the sick bowl are disinfected after every bout.
Adults with it,although feeling like shit, have to do own clearing up and disinfecting after self.

It's not inevitable (although quite possible) everyone will get it if you are rigid about hygiene.
