TMI but help with horrible periods please

I read on here about an acid thing you can buy over the counter to reduce the flow, but have stupidly forgotten what it is called and when you're supposed to take it. I'm day 4 in and it's still very, very heavy. And (sorry for tmi) have just had a clot as big as a tablespoon.

I hate going to the doctor's - do I need to make an appointment? When I asked a few years ago, he just told me to get a coil fitted but I don't want one, so have been trying to put up with it.

Anybody, please?

Remus, I don't know what your plans are regarding more kids but I had an endometrial ablation done last year for heavy periods. Best thing I ever did and if you don't t want more kids its something I'd recommend.

That's it - thank you so much.

Is it Tranexamic Acid Remus? I've never used or know how to i'm afraid.

I went to GP abt heavy periods, they told me I was peri-menopausal Hmm
They did investigations & said it was "just one of those things" TBH it did sort itself out.

It was awful for 6 months though, some days I would just sit on the loo & watch clots fall out (TMI)

Sorry, pressed send too soon - I know what you've said re going to the GP however in terms of what you've described, I think if it were me, I would go. Tranexamic Acid hopefully will be of some benefit but surely it's worth getting advice from a GP as well (can you see a different Doctor to the one you saw before?)

Thanks Viva. Dp had the 'snip' so deffo no more kids! But anything like that means I have to go to the quack's.

North - yes, I recognise that feeling. This has gone on for years now, not months: it's my own fault for not going back to the doc's, I know.

When I went to the dr they tried to talk me into a coil. I declined, I didn't want hormones and 10 years previously had had a copper coil and didn't get on with it.

Likewise I declined norethisterone and asked for a referral to a gynaecologist. Gynae consultant was lovely (but he is a colleague which helps).

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/01/2013 18:00

Thanks Viva.

The last gynae appointment I had (pre dcs) was so awful that just the idea of another one makes me feel sick. It was in a ground floor room and there were no curtains and he told me that my horribly heavy and painful periods (like tar at the time) were probably to do with IBS! Grrrr.

Oh Remus, I would suggest asking your friends for a recommendation of a kindly GP who they've had good experiences with.

Hope you get it sorted soon, it sounds awful

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/01/2013 19:04

Thank you. I've got a new GP (well, he's been my GP for nearly 7 years but I actually haven't been to see him in all that time!) so I will make an appointment. In the meantime, I'll try the acid stuff.
