Dry January - a month off the booze - anyone want to join me?

Doshusallie · 01/01/2013 14:54

I am determined to do this - I drink most days, it's become a habit, just a glass or two, more at weekends, but really want to give myself an extended break.

The worst time of day for me is between 6-8 pm, before we eat. So am going to try and eat earlier and it would be great if I could come on here and get some support about that time of day!

does anybody want to have a dry January with me?

And yes I do have a hangover today Grin

Well done TWinkly!

I'm home alone this evening, so no temptation in my way.

Wow another weekend nearly done - dh has next Friday off -when will we start the celebrations?

I made it through a night out on Friday with no booze at all and had a lovely time.
Originally I was thinking I was going to dive into a nice bottle of red to celebrate not drinking all Jan (aside from my ½ bitter!!!) but I don't think I want to. Seems a bit odd to celebrate by drinking. Anyone else feeling this or just me being odd.

I am loving the no hangover feeling. I'm up and bright on a Sunday morning - WTF!!!

I will see if MN will move this to somewhere like health so we can meet back on 01.01.14 Grin

Oh that's a good idea glitch

It does feel pretty damn good waking up after a night out suffering from nothing worse than sore feet.

Hearty congratulations to you all for getting this far.
My Dh's birthday is in January so it would be a no-no for us.
We shall shortly be moving this to Health so you can come back next year.
I salute you and your cordials.

Thank you Olivia - and glitch for the idea.

glitch - I'm feeling the same about celebrating the end of the dry month. It's my birthday next week, but I don't fancy going out or having a drink. This is partly because DH and I will be back together next weekend and I was planning on waiting for that until I had a drink. He moved into our new house last week, and the plan was to celebrate with some fizz, but right now I don't fancy that either (I will be jet lagged and knackered from an overnight flight when I get there).

It's the same with caffeine - people at work keep telling me I can have a coffee next week, but I've got so used to mint tea/hot water/hot ribena that I'm not that bothered (I'm usually a two-cups-of-coffee-before-I-get-out-of-bed person Grin).

Whereas I walked past my favourite tapas bar yesterday and watched all the people inside having a lovely glass of wine with some nibbles and had to peel myself away....I miss it. I'm committed to finish though and will be back next January. No desire to have sugar - I gave that up for January as well.

Confession time. I had a small glass of savingnon Blanc last night at a family meal Blush Have a really let myself down? Feel guilty, like I came so far and didn't manage it, its just that I miss it and I feel like I have achieved what I needed to so whats the harm...... Now I want a glass of red tonight, but no more then till Friday, is that bad or is it just good that I am being realistic in wanting ultimately to be a controlled and healthy drinker rather than a non drinker IYSWIM? Or am I just making excuses?
February is 5:2 month so i'll see what that brings.....

No worries Tuffinmop - I don't think anyone will judge you. The problem is that socialising brings temptation with a capital T...

We were very tempted by the Waitrose Dine in for £10 offer yesterday....DW got as far as surveying the wine and then made a hasty exit from the shop...It was very tempting indeed....

Ahhhh! We are in 'health'.jolly good! That kind of sums it up! Health. Healthier attitude to drinking.
My next project is the sweet stuff. That will be February's challenge.
Still a few days to go and I'm not even counting down anymore. Very proud of myself.
Might do a dry June as well. Half way through the year.

Also very tempted today...holding out now.

I am doing my best with sweet stuff, but it rather went to rat shit tonight, as I made a coffee chocolate torte and lemon cupcakes for DH to take to work, and had to taste test the batters and icings Blush

One step at a time...

I've just smoked my last cigarette FOREVER.

And I've packed my bag for gym tomorrow.

I'm getting healthy.

twinklestar2 you are a MARVEL! Well done!

TWinkly - it would have been rude not to have quality controlled the batters and icings Grin

spud - dry June eh? I might join you Smile

tuffin - one little glass won't hurt. At least you stopped after one Smile

Thank for moving the thread Olivia. How many of us will be back next Jan 1st I wonder Grin

Twinklestar well done on stopping smoking. Just take it a day at a time and you can get there.

Spud, I may consider a dry June too.

I have also stopped counting down. Funny isn't it how you just get used to not reaching for the wine bottle at 7.00pm!

Twinklestar2 hope you get your heart's desire for the coming year....

You know I think we've almost come out the other side not really thinking that we are going to rush to have a drink on Friday....how did that happen?

And definitely think we are on for having at least one more alcohol-free month during the year....or perhaps two - June and November???

It had been a very interesting exercise on so many levels....
