Worried about cervical cancer?

I had a baby 5 months ago and was told during my pregnancy that I was due a smear but they no longer give out reminders so I need to book it up to 6 weeks after birth. I've just booked it for today . I've been getting a lot of back pain and period type pains but no periods for a few weeks now. I am on cerezette aswell so this could be that but I've never had this pain before being on cerezette. When we have intercourse I have pink stained mucous after and by the morning it's quite a bit along with the dull period pain. I will book a GP appointment after my smear today but would just like to know if anyone can shed some light on this ?

TIA

It could be a cervical ectopian. I have one which can cause bleeding after sex and also I believe pain at times. These can be caused by pregnancy. It is harmless and nothing to worry about but of course it wise to have a smear. The nurse should be able to tell if you have ectropian when you have a smear.

Xmasfun,,, I have exactly the same things you mention here, pink discharge, or often fresh blood, and sometimes abdo pain after intercourse. I have lots of other things too, all my smears are up to date and ok, but I went to my GP about it. The first GP dismissed it,, but I went back to another one a few months later and last week I saw a gynae doc at the hospital. She has reassured ,e that it is all fine, that I have an e tropism which makes the cervix bleed easily and I am going to have treatment in the new year (straightforward).
I would try not to worry, but just advise you to speak to a GP and to get a referral if needed.
Hope this puts your mind at rest,, always best to get checked out though.

What treatment is it ? Sounds like that must be what I have? I'm breastfeeding aswell so not sure if that's effecting my cervix getting back to normal after birth?

Reminders are still sent, it depends on when you were due originally. You'll usually get around 3 invite/reminder letters over a few months and then it's reset to 3 years again (if you're in England and aged 24.5-49).
If you're concerned about the pains then you're right to see your GP about them, a smear is not a diagnostic test, it's a screening test.
An ectropian is a normal physical condition. The cervical skin is thin where the outer and inner cervix met, as the lining of the inner cervix is thinner. This means the blood vessels are closer to the surface and it will bleed more readily. If the hormone levels as lower oestrogen then the skin can stay thin and this may also make it more likely to bleed.
The treatment (if an ectropian is tending to get inflammed and bleeding) is often cauterisation.
The main thing is to see a GP (as you're planning to do) and go through all the symptoms you're having. Cervical cancer is quite rare, and there are lots of other reasons for your symptoms but they need to checked out.

I had CIN 111 carcinoma in Situ, but had no symptoms - certainly no pain.
I doubt it is cervical cancer, most unlikely. More everything recovering from childbirth.

Seriously I had not one reminder ? I was due one in July but my dd was due end of July so wouldn't have had it done anyway , maybe that's y I didn't receive a reminder ? I told the nurse about cramping she said it could be hormonal from cerezette and breastfeeding. I was in agony last night with the cramps and back pain and felt quite sick too and dizzy but woke up much better this morning ? Strange .

The GP surgery may have changed your next test due date on the prior notification list as it was due at the same time as your EDD. The admin at the surgery should be able to look up your screening record on the Open Exeter database and check the date you were due to be called for screening. It also records when the invite letter was sent, when you were on their prior notification list and if the recall date has been delayed the reason why.

Did the nurse arrange any investigations or have you booked into see the GP, as your symptoms sound quite discomforting. A smear is not a test for investigating symptoms such as the ones you're having.

Personally I'd see the GP as well, because you were talking about being in agony with cramps and back pain, as well as the bleeding.

Re the screening - I forgot to ask how old you are and whether you'd been screened before because that can affect when you are sent reminder letters.

Xmasfun · 02/01/2013 19:59

Yes I think I should get it checked out , not sure if it was period pain or stomach pain tbh it was blimming awful :( I'm 28 and this was my 2nd screening , I've got 3 children .

I did have cervical cancer in Situ, but had no pain or any symptoms

BelaLug0si · 02/01/2013 21:07

Digerd CIN3 is not cervical cancer, it's precancerous changes which isn't usually associated with symptoms. This why its screened for. CIN3 was sometimes called carcinoma in situ but it isn't now as its quite confusing.

Xmasfun - there are quite a few things that could cause the pain e.g. I had excruciating periods. It turned out to be endometriosis, adenomyosis and an ovarian cyst. Hope the GP is able to give you a good look over - and you feel better soon.
