. . . . have thrush do I have to go to see the GP or can I get over the counter remedies for it?

Have never had it before but am 99.9 per cent sure that I do now Sad.

What can I take? Am not pregnant or breastfeeding, if that helps.

TIA.

yes you can get canestan from any chemist

JonesTheSteam · 15/04/2006 20:29

Thanks, sl - is that a cream? Isn't there some sort of tablet you can take as well?

OP posts:
Blossomhill · 15/04/2006 20:30

Get the tablet Diflucan. So much better and clears it up from inside. Although would still get some cream to alleviate symptoms asap.
Drink lots of water and don't wear g strings!

This is from someone who has suffered for over 8 years but has had 6 months of not having (fingers crossed).

CaptainCavemansMummy · 15/04/2006 20:30

Canestan duo, it's a tablet and a pessary/cream.

on your behalf, oouuucchhh, it's not a pleasant thing to have!!

Janh · 15/04/2006 20:31

You can get a kit with the cream and a pessary/applicator.

Good luck Smile

starlover · 15/04/2006 20:31

canestan do a cream and a tablet. or you can get a combination pack of tablet plus cream

JonesTheSteam · 15/04/2006 20:31

Thanks BH - is Diflucan available over the counter?

(Sorry about my ignorance - and sorry to hear about your 8 years of suffering!!!)

OP posts:
JonesTheSteam · 15/04/2006 20:33

Thanks for the sympathy guys - having never had it before, I now realise I've probably been unsympathetic to friends before!!!

How long does the stuff take to work?

And also I have a smear test booked Tuesday morning - do you think I should try and defer it?

Thanks again.

OP posts:
Blossomhill · 15/04/2006 20:34

Jones - Phone and ask about smear.

Yes you can buy tablet over counter but I think it's about £12.

I never minded paying as always felt so awful when having it. I think you can get a prescription but hard now due to easter.

Blossomhill · 15/04/2006 20:35

Also if you can get something like actimel. I have stopped having my bouts of thrush since drinking it!

kid · 15/04/2006 20:35

They can test you for thrush when they do the smear. If you do have thrush, it can make the result unclear so they would have to repeat the smear.

JonesTheSteam · 15/04/2006 20:36

LOL - after reading the NHS direct website, following my suspicions, I headed straight to the fridge for one of those probiotic Muller yoghurt things (like Actimel)!!! Grin

OP posts:
Janh · 15/04/2006 20:40

If no probiotics in, how about applying a crunch corner? Wink

sunandmoon · 15/04/2006 20:40

Water, Water & Water and drink lots of itSmileSmile & Smile... Canesten is a great relief too!!!!

ShaysMummy · 15/04/2006 20:43

you can buy canestedn but it is about £10- £15 depending on what combo you go for.
If you still have an NHS exemption card you're sorted.
:)

edam · 15/04/2006 20:50

All these suggestions good but also buy some live yoghurt, put it in the fridge so it's nice and cool, and apply to the affected parts...

and make sure you warn everyone else not to eat out of that pot!

JonesTheSteam · 15/04/2006 20:51

No exemption card here - DS is 2.6!!!

JoolsToo · 15/04/2006 20:52

Ah! - have just been to the GP for the same thing - he prescribed Canestan which is darn site cheaper than buying it over the counter!

JonesTheSteam · 15/04/2006 20:52

Edam - as they say down here, ych-a-fi (or ewwwwwwwwwwwww!)

OP posts:
JonesTheSteam · 15/04/2006 20:53

If you don't mind me asking, Jools Too - what did the doctor do - did he actually examine you, or did he just write a script?

OP posts:
JoolsToo · 15/04/2006 20:57

No, he had a look, but tbh that sort of thing doesn't concern me. I've had children soooooo.

I'd rather have peace of mind Smile

JonesTheSteam · 15/04/2006 20:59

Still bothers me, I'm afraid - I know it shouldn't, though Blush.

Had to psych myself up to book my smear test (although my last one was fine, the one before came back with abnormal results, so having to have 3 in 18 months).

Now it looks like I'll have to postpone it!!!!

OP posts:
JoolsToo · 15/04/2006 20:59

he took a swab too

JoolsToo · 15/04/2006 21:01

you need to know for certain that it is thrush so you need to be examined - it takes about a minute!

rumtumtigger · 15/04/2006 21:01

See the doctor if you haven't had it before as you need to be certain it isn#t anything else
