Period Pains - is this normal or should I be concerned?

My 14yo DD started her periods about 18 months ago.

In recent months she has been complaining of period pains and needing to lie down with a hot water bottle and take couple of paracetamol which seems to help.

What strikes me as odd (and maybe this is just me) is that this is never at the start of her period but usually mid way through or towards the end. Is this normal? I myself usually find day 2 and 3 (out of a 7 or 8 day period) can be the bad days IF I get a bad month. I know we all different but was wondering if anyone else gets period pains that start several days into a period (or towards the end) and if anyone thinks I should be concerned. I have asked a few friends and all so far say, like me, the start is the heavier and more painful days for those of us that suffer.

Input most appreciated. I dont want to drag an embarrassed 14yo off to the GP unneccessarily and am trying to guage if I am worrying over something or nothing.

okay, (getting out soapbox to stand on):

Period pain used to be classified into 2 types: there was an early type ("primary") which meant pain up to and including first day, and a "secondary" type that started from Day 2 onwards. The early type was supposed to always happen right from 1st period girl had ever & usually disappear after having babies, and the secondary type was only supposed to happen after late teens, and especially after having babies.

(are you taking notes?)

But the truth is that period pains are individual & normal & don't follow any normal pattern for everyone. I had a very debilitating "primary" type but it only started in my early-mid 20s. Confused Which is why I ended researching this (in real books, back before we had WWW). And then for me the pains went away for a long while after having children, but have now returned (bastards).

If she can cope with what she has then it's normal for her. If it's overly painful there are prescription drugs to ask about.

Of course I'm just a stranger on the 'Net. You could make an appointment to talk it all over with your GP without your DD present, and GP will advise if they think they can help or should see her.

hth.

My periods start as nothing but heavy spotting for a couple of days and then full on pain/ flow for about 3 days then completely ends.......like you said, everyone is different.....

Agree with lijkk. We're all different. If over the counter meds don't help, see the GP.
