Question about urinalysis results

I'm posting on here although thisn relates to my 2.5yo DD.

About ten days ago she had pain when she went for a wee. This happened a few times over so later that day we took her to the out of hours GP. Her urine sample was tested with a dipstick and showed leukocytes, protein and blood. The GP sent her sample to the lab for sulture and sensitivity testing. She also started her on ABs.

By the following morning, she was no longer in pain and I presumed the ABs had done the job. She completed the course and has had no pain since.

I called the GP for her lab urine test results and they came back as clear for bacteria, but showed white blood cells. So basically, no bacterial infection it would seem.

She has since had her urine retested with the dipstick and it still shows leukocytes, protein and blood. The GP has sent a second sample to the lab now too.

I can't fathom how she seemed to respond to the ABs, if there was no bacteria present.

Also, what else could these findings represent. The GP didn't seem bothered and said there can be all sorts of reasons white blood cells, protein and blood in a toddler's urine.

She is absolutely well. The only thing she had recently (at the same time as the painful wees) was conjunctivitis. This cleared by itself after a few days.

Can anyone offer any advice?

It could be a lot of things. I would keep an eye on her temperature, if it goes up take her back to your GP. That could indicate infection.

White blood cells, protein and blood doesn't sound normal for anyone imo, but I'm not a doctor. When I had kidney stones and kidney infections I had that all the time. It sounds as though it's different for little ones though. Generally, it's serious if someone develops a fever. If she gets one, get her seen to asap. UTI's can be really nasty.

Thank you, Bun

I've dipped her urine again today and it's showing a lower level of wbc and a trace of protein, but no blood. Still waiting to hear lab results.

She hasn't had a temp at all throughout this and has been really well!

No problem minty. I wouldn't worry too much if she hasn't had a temperature, but keep an eye on her though. I hope it all gets cleared up soon.

Lab results are back now and GP called to ask me to take DD in later this afternoon. Apparently, this sample showed mixed moderate bacterial growth. Anyway, I'm going to have a good chat with the GP at least and hopefully get this sorted.

I'm glad they've got to the bottom of it. The GP can give her the right AB's. Get her to drink loads.

knackeredoutmum · 21/12/2012 20:06

let us know what docs said, what a worry for you

mintymellons · 22/12/2012 19:16

Well, the GP said that mixed bacterial growth on a sample indicates a contaminated sample (bacteria from the bowel), so doesn't necessarily mean infection. As she is well with no current symptoms, she hasn't been prescribed anything. I questioned the dipstick readings and was told not to worry about that, so I'm going to put it out of my mind unless she gets poorly

Are they checking a slide for intra-cellular bacteria. This can enable so infections to 'hide'.

topsi · 24/12/2012 09:18

Also the NHS will only regularly check for certain strains of bacteria and won't pick up some of the more unusual ones
