Suddenly emotional 4 weeks post op - subtotal hysterectomy

I'm feeling very emotional today - suddenly bursting into tears for no apparent reason and now feel very touchy. I'm 4 weeks post op and was wondering if this is 'normal' or should I be concerned. Has anyone else experienced strange emotions after this op? Any advice?

Join the club!

I too am 4 weeks post op [TAH and BSO] today and I feel just the same.

I got really upset when Lisa Riley left Strictly on Sunday [I'm normally very stoic] and all day yesterday even the tiniest thing got me blinking away tears.

I think it's normal from what I can gather from other women who've had it.

Lots of rest and don't overdo it.

SoozBB · 18/12/2012 16:15

Thanks SugaricePlumFairy. I actually kep my ovaries and cervix so didn't think I'd have any hormonal 'ups and downs' like this. I go for my check up on 7th Jan so will deffo mention it then. Am trying not to overdo things but after I have, my body certainly lets me know and the only way I can describe it is that it feels like I have a tampon inserted incorrectly 'down there'! I'm doing my pelvic floor exercises like mad and after a rest and an easier day it's fine.

Emotionally most of the time I'm fine but yesterday was very strange - tears and feeling very easily irritable. I really hope it stops as I don't want to feel like that on Christmas Day!

Thanks for your support.

Hi I had mine on Monday and was discharged Wednesday. he consultant told me I would be "a bit all over the place " until I see him in clinic in 6 weeks time, I had asked about HRT as I had everything removed then he would decide what hormones if any I get.

SugaricePlumFairy · 20/12/2012 14:01

How are you feeling today SoozBB?

SoozBB · 20/12/2012 18:41

Hi SugaricePlumFairy, Feeling fine today. It's only the one day that was pretty pants so far. Had a headache for a day or so now and my boobs feel huge - maybe it's my body trying to have a period but with nothing happening! Had a nice snooze when I got home from work yesterday for an hour.

I feel as if my body has recovered brilliantly so far, all things considered, and am cooking etc now (not hoovering though or carrying shopping bags!) and no driving until next week, which is a real pain. I'm back to full days at work next week, which is fine, as it's only Christmas Eve, then possibly Boxing Day (both me and my partner work in a theatre and we have a million performances of a panto to get through!), another day in work then on Friday half day again before heading off to have my annual mammogram (family history of breast cancer). So it's a pretty easy week next week really actually. My check with the consultant is on 7th Jan.

Btw had sex at the weekend (I know it was too early really) but everything felt fine and still working as it should so I'm hoping there's no damage been done!

How are you feeling now? Have you levelled out after your teary day or is it still ongoing? I'm just waiting for my next 'episode' and praying that I'll feel good on Christmas Day.

Sounds like we are going through a similar process, and I feel reassured by your posts.

I'm 4 weeks post op too and have been feeling close to tears quite a lot today and totally drained. Up to now I have been really cheerful due (i think) a sense of relief that the op was over and that i felt better physically than i was expecting. Over the last few days I have been much busier and getting back to my normal life which may be too much too soon; easier said than done when Christmas is approaching!

standsonshiftingsands · 20/12/2012 20:12

Hi ,

I can't comment on your particular op - but I had a fairly major brain op this time last year (yeah to put one in my h says) and found myself very emotional for a long time after. I thought it was normal after any majorish surgery.

Good luck and take care.

SoozBB · 20/12/2012 23:26

Nopressure, I too am feeling physically pretty amazing considering I'm now minus an organ! I felt very relieved when it was all over as I'd had a 'large' fibroid taking over my insides and I'd been having to self-catheterise about 2-3 times a week since May due to the pressure it was putting on my bladder and urethra. That's all been resolved now and it's been brilliant not having to carry around little 'tubes' everywhere I go. I also think if you have the positive mental attitude and that you can get back to normal it helps immensely with recovery. Luckily I did all my Christmas shopping either before the op or online whilst loafing in bed after the op so I only have to worry about the actual food shopping now. I have been told I can't drive until 27th Dec.

I've been much more positive at work since the op and I feel 'lighter' in a sense, like a burden has been removed somehow.

Standsonshiftingsands - my gosh, I'm not surprised you were emotional after your op. I sincerely hope that you are now fully recovered and that you can look forward to happier times. It must have been terrible for you.

Thanks for your support ladies
x

Morning all! Xmas Grin

I'm not feeling too bad although I've just welled up after watching BBC news about dogs/choirs/beauty therapists visiting patients in hospital and cheering them up!, it doesn't take much these days!

I've got the dreaded hot flushes which strike at any time but particularly at night which are disturbing my sleep which in turn makes me tired then weepy.

Sooz take care going back to work but great about the sex, go you! Xmas Grin

SoozBB · 24/12/2012 17:18

Happy Christmas to all my friends who've supported me lately on Mumsnet. Hope you all have a happy, restful one!

Happy New Year everyone. Feeling pretty much back to normal now, except for a few twinges after carrying dd yesterday. How are you all getting on?

Sugarice · 03/01/2013 22:13

I'm feeling pretty good to be honest apart from these hot flushes!

6 weeks post op and still haven't hoovered or carried baskets of washing but I pushed a trolley round Sainsburys this afternoon . I've had a few twinges since and felt a little uncomfortable so been in bed since 8.30 just stretching out and relaxing.

Seeing consultant in 2 weeks and will discuss HRT, not sure about that now.

SoozBB · 06/01/2013 16:02

I'm feeling full of beans most of the time -or maybe it's something to do with the nespresso coffee machine i got for Christmas?!?

Walking loads and loads, no more irrational tears yet and seeing consultant for post op appointment tomorrow. The only thing that made me 'feel' a little uncomfortable was hoovering my bedroom, as it's fairly new and needs quite a bit of push behind the hoover. The rest of the house is fine and don't feel as if I really need to be careful at all now, except for the heavy lifting bit.

Am still managing to pee normally - it's something you really take for granted - so have thrown all but the last box of catheters away now too. YESSSSS.
