Undercooked chicken

Am seething with dh. I was working this evening so he cooked tea for himself and 18 year old ds and his girlfriend. I walked into the room as dh was poking a bit of chicken around his plate which, quite frankly, was raw in the middle. I rushed into the dimly lit living room where ds and his gf were sitting in front of the tv with almost empty plates. They reckoned their chicken was OK 'apart from the odd uncooked bit'.

DH claims there must be something wrong with the oven as "most of it was OK". I broke open 2 bits which hadn't been eaten and they were raw in the middle too. He's a bit of a "cook it as long as it says on the packet and don't use my eyes" person whereas, unless it's charred on the outside and I've inspected the inside, I won't serve it. I wouldn't be surprised if he'd crammed it all onto a small baking tray and not left room for the heat to circulate.

Soooo, is there any possibility that ds and his gf will be OK? (sod dh)

I spent a week in hospital with salmonella poisoning when I was 30 and didn't eat for nearly 3 weeks. It was horrendous and now I'm horrified at what might be in store for ds and his gf (did I say "sod dh"?).

Is it possible to eat raw/undercooked chicken and NOT be ill???!!!!

Yes it is, not all chicken is contaminated with food poisoning organisms and you have to get enough of a dose of bacteria (something like 10,000 organisms) to get sick. It's a gamble though, lets hope they're all okay.

when did they eat it and are they feeling ok? when i had food poisoning from chicken the symptoms began pretty quickly.

longingforsomesleep · 14/12/2012 20:39

they ate it around 6pm and have just been back into the kitchen to stock up with ice cream, crisps and coke ..... They're obviously not bothered! I could barely eat my personally cooked charred stir fry thinking about what they might have ingested!

When I had salmonella it took a couple of days to develop....

Yep it might be Sunday before they get symptoms. If you're really worried you could get some diarlyte sachets just in case.

I once ate raw chicken by accident, went to a BBQ and they had cooked skewers next to the raw ones....I'd had a couple and didn't realise I was chowing down on raw chicken....I was fine. However, when I think about it im not!

How are they all now Longing.

If you cook the food until it is charred just to make sure, you are probably not a good judge of whether the food is undercooked or not.

StuntNun - they're both fine today - thanks for asking. Looks like we got away with it!

Amerryscot - when I said 'charred' I was, of course, exaggerating (nothing wrong with a bit of hyperbole). Even if I was using the word literally I'm not sure how that removes my ability to recognise the colour pink!!!

Phew glad to hear it. I'm sure he won't do that again after all the stress it caused you.

Good news! I found out the other day they serve chicken sushi in some London restaurants..not sure I'd be up for that.
